Vault question for the specialists vault client and server updates!

We run vault 2013 server and inventor 2012, typically when a vault update is released there is a client and server update in the release. what do i we, install the client update for 2012 and install the server update for 2013? we can run a side by side installation of the vault 2012 and 2013 client but will the client updates for 2013 have any effect on the vault errors inside inventor 2012. as i know the inventor 2012 uses the vault client 2012 to communicate with the vault server. Please clarify explain this issue to me.

Hi Kent,

not 100% sure what your real question is.

However we recommend to install the latest SP on Vault Server 2013 and the 2012 and 2013 clients.

You could run the clients unpatched but issues that are fixed on the client side will still exist.

By the way: with Vault 2012 SP2 and Vault 2013 SP1 more or less the same issues are adressed (if the issues were in both versions).

What i try to find out is, when a vault update is released it allways states install the updates on the server and the client. so i figure there have to be some things in the updates that only works if you update both the servers and the client, in the same release (maybe 2013)? I never seen a vault update for 2011 - 2012 or 2013 server that states that if we for example run the 2012 client i we have to update this to the latest client for the updates to work?

I tried to install only inventor 2012 with vault professional client 2013 and our server runs Vault Professional 2013. But this scenario dos not work because inventor needs the vault client 2012.

And now i am at the point where i am not sure that things fixed in the vault 2013 clients are fixed the same ways in the vault 2012 client.

But the way i understant your reply, when we run inventor 2012 always install Vaultclient 2012 latest updates and install the latest Vault 2013 updates on the server? then we are covered the best way.

I dont think this is riliable? there are some new features in the vault 2013 client that does not exist in the 2012 vault client. ( for example better search inside inventor, in the Vault )

maybe i dont explain my self to good ? sorry for that.

Hi Kent,

well at first at all it is highly recommended but not mandatory.

You won´t break existing functionality if the clients are unpatched.

Example: Without SP the clients can´t open a specific file.

If you install SP1 you can open the file

So the only difference is that you still have the issue opening a file if the SP is not installed.Nothing more nothing less.

Hopefully this is the response which you were looking for 🙂
