Vault Collaboration Windows Permissions Required

Hi All

We have discovered an issue in Vault Collaboration 2012.

Logged into windows as a user with local admin rights the user is able to access vault and select the 'copy design' function.

However if the user is not a local admin once in vault the 'copy design' function displays an "Error - The Parameter is incorrect" message.

I have tried logging activity with process monitor and have given users permissions across the C: drive but this has not fixed the error. Power user rights did not work either.

Can anyone shed any light on what may cause this error?

What permissions do you normally give to users of Vault and Inventor?

Please note that "give users local admin rights" is NOT an acceptable answer for our network environment.

Is it possible to do a check-out or get operation on a file that you are attempting to perform the Copy Design operation on?  Also, what is the working folder for the files in the Copy Design operation?

Thanks,

Jim

Hi Jim

Yes all other tasks seem to work OK. We had a training course in which all functionality was OK for the users apart from the copy design function.

The vault system has C:\CAD configured as its working folder. We have already tried increasing the user rights on all of the Autodesk folders we can find.

I am working with Scott here and we are trying to come up with different ideas on this.  The suggestion that came up deals with library parts.  Are there any library parts in this assembly? And the folder that the library folder is mapped to contained inside the C:\CAD area or is it mapped elsewhere?

By library parts are you refering to content centre parts i.e. Standard bolts etc?

We have a very simple test vault as we are currently piloting the vault system and have lots to learn.

So in vault I have

ProjectExplorer$

   Content

   Projects

      00000

          part.ipt

      MH-003

          assembly.iam

The assembly.iam is made up of very basic shapes made during the training. Part.ipt is the part that is shared and used by other assembly files.

We tried to reproduce this here and were unsuccessful.  Is it possible to get a screen capture of the copy design and the error it is throwing?  Also, if you can get the vlogs and console logs from the ADMS Console.  Maybe with that information we can help debug this issue.

Thanks,

Jim

Hope these images are clear enough.

As you can see the local admin user logged into vault is able to carry out the copy design function. Whereas the non-admin user using the same vault login gets the error message.

There is no content in the ADMSConsole Log applicable to the time the error was received. The Server log contains the following

Success

Thanks for taking the time to look Pete

Another point I forgot to add.

When a non-admin user tries to Get/Checkout files to the local C:\CAD folder he gets - Error Updating File Links

These are files that have already been pulled down to the C:\CAD folder by a user with Windows admin rights.

I have tried giving users Full Control over the Autodesk installation folder and the Vault working folders that have been set as C:\CAD and C:\TEMP

Is it possible to go into Windows Explorer as a non-admin user and attempt to copy and paste a file into the C:\CAD folder?  Maybe even create a file in that folder.

When the Non Admin user is logged in can you please check whether the correct project file is used under Tools->Options->Inventor Project File before doing the check out?

Jim - Yes the non-admin user does have access to the C:\CAD folder. Using the Get/Checkout function the files are downloaded to the local drive. But the Error updating file links message still shows up.

Senthil - Yes the same project file is used for both the admin and the non admin windows logins. The same account is used to access the Vault.

The machine currently sits in an OU that has UAC turned off.

Could this be something to do with registry permissions? We have tried changing a few but only managed to prevent Inventor from working.

What I believe what Senthil meant is the Inventor ipj file not the windows profile. In Vault, for the users with problems, do they have anything set in Tools>Options Inventor Project File field. If not, try setting the Inventor Project in that dialog and retrying the copy design and get/check out.
