Vault 2015 and MasterCAM

Hello,

We are in the process of implementing Vault Pro. The machine shop currently uses MasterCAM and employs Inventor View to view Inventor geometry. They have Vault Pro 2015 installed and running on their system. Does anyone know if MasterCAM can open files directly from Vault? I know there is not an add-in available, but I was hoping someone has a workaround.

Thanks.

Vault has the ability to manage any type of file, and it uses the windows file associations to decide which application to open the files in.

If you have masterCAM files associated with masterCAM, then RMB --> Open (from the Vault Client) will open that file in masterCAM.

Have you looked at InventorHSM? It is a powerful and super easy-to-use CAM system that runs directly inside Inventor and it is an Autodesk product.

It would be well worth investigating if you want to bring CAM data into the PDM system (Vault) because the CAM data is stored inside the Inventor files.

I did a class on this exact topic at Autodesk University 2014: http://au.autodesk.com/au-online/live-stream/truly-integrated-cam

Thanks for your response, but I guess I was not clear.

It is not the MasterCAM files we are vaulting yet. The machinist would like to be able to open an inventor ipt from within Vault. He has Inventor View installed and everything was running uneventfully. That was before Vault came along. Since no Vault add-in exists for MasterCAM, trying to open a file from within Vault results in either an error or corrupted geometry. If he downloads the file to his system, and then tries to open it he receives this error:Vault Error.png

Vault is basically useless to him if we cannot work this out. Are there specific settings we need to apply to get this to function?

We are familiar with HSM and will be looking into it, although getting the machine shop to jump ship may prove problematic.

Thanks,

The error dialog you show is a Vault dialog that appeared when trying to open it straight from Vault.  Try using the View in Window command or try to perform a Get then goto the Working folder and open it from Windows Explorer.  Does that work?

Yes, that workflow has been functioning fine, thanks. They were hoping that it would be possible to open the files directly from Vault, and save them a few steps. No go, I guess, unless someone else has some suggestions?

Thanks for your help.

Have you tried right-clicking an Inventor file in windows explorer and selecting "Open with..." and then choosing Inventor view?

If you check the box that says "Always use this program to open the file" it will associate that file type with Inventor View in the operating system.

Does that then allow you to open directly from vault?

No, that does not work.
