Use of Vault Basic with only Autodesk Drawing Review

Hi,

Our IT department is currently setting up a new server for our CAD files and we are installing Vault Basic as a trial to see if it is what we would like to move towards.  He has had trouble installing it and says that he believes it is because he does not have one of the attached programs installed on his computer.  We only have a few people that actually work on drawings here that would need autocad the rest of the people just need to be able to view the drawings with Autodesk drawing review.  So if we have Vault controlling our drawing database will someone with only autodesk drawing review installed be able to view our drawings?

Unfortunately Vault basic can only be deployed with a companion Autodesk product such as AutoCAD or Inventor etc.  If other users wish to view drawings in Vault then you will require either Vault Workgroup or Vault Professional.

Remember Vault product types cannot be mixed so you would require, say, Vault Workgroup for all your users including those running a CAD application.

Vault professional does offer an unlimited number of web access licenses allowing any user on the network, with a login, to access vault and preview the drawing files from within an internet  browser.  So with Vault Pro you would only need as many licenses as you have CAD users.

Hope this helps.

So.... just so I am understanding this 100% lets review.  If we have Vault Pro and we have 8 networking seats of autocad anyone using one of the autocad networking seats will be able to access and check out drawings within Vault Pro. With Vault Pro anyone in our company will have access to our drawings via internet browser.  Is this right?

PS.. Just out of curiosity, why does Vault basic come with Drawing Review if you can't use it without autocad?

Exactly...

Though remember as Vault Pro is networked licensed you can buy 8 licenses and install it as many times as you want. Only the first 8 users logging in get to use it.

In addition to the flexible licensing Vault Pro offers you can allow any user in your company - with a valid login - to access the data via the web client.  Its read only access and is normally restricted to viewing files that are in a release state in the workflow. Workflow being another advantage to using Vault Pro.

Oh I almost forgot the Design review question.  This is included with Vault Basic to allow a Vault user to view the DWF render Vault creates rather than having to open the original file in Inventor\AutoCAD.

This is incorrect:

"If we have Vault Pro and we have 8 networking seats of autocad anyone using one of the autocad networking seats will be able to access and check out drawings within Vault Pro."

Your AutoCAD license entitles you to a Vault Basic client license.  Vault Basic will not connect to a Vault Professional server.  For Vault Professional, you will need additional Network Licenses installed on the license manager.  So if User A wants to use AutoCAD and Vault Professional, a license for each product would need to be available.

Hywell,

Of course.  I did allude to that in my first post in the thread.  Apologies if i wasn't clear in later posts.
