Upgrading ADMS 5 to ADMS 2009

Hello All,

I am currently in the process of preparing to upgrade my ADMS 5 and Inventor R11 Userbase to ADMS 2009 and Inventor R2009.

I have applied SP4 to all my R11 Clients in preparation for the 'Client Upgrade For R11 SP4 to Access ADMS 2009' and have upgraded SQL Express 2005 to SQL 2005.

I plan to upgrade from ADMS 5 to ADMS 2009 over a weekend and apply the R11 Client patch to my 75 users in one hit.

I already know that all my clients need .Net 2.0 for the patch to install and that to install a Vault 2009 Client I need to remove my older DWF Viewers so that Design Review 2009 can be installed.

My main question is what happens to the Content Center data that I currently have in ADMS 5 that my R11 clients still need to access in ADMS 2009. I did a trial install on a dummy server and I get AI2009 Libraries and my previous Inventor Libraries. Is this correct.

When I fianlly get to upgrading my Invnetor R11 to Inventor R2009 I know I can migrate the data in the Vaults with the Task Scheduler but do I need to migrate the Content Center (Libraries) too. If so, how do I.?

All help greatly appreciated.

After upgrading to ADMS2009, run the ADMS Console. You should see the R11
standard content libraries, your user libraries in the R11 partition, the
2009 standard content libraries (assuming you installed them), and your user
libraries in the 2009 partition. None of them should require migration (if
any do, right click on them and migrate them). You can see what partition a
given library is in by clicking on it in the tree - the the right pane has a
bunch of details about the library including the partition. If any of your
user libraries are not in the 2009 partition, right click on the R11 user
library and copy it to the 2009 partition.

At this point, once the "Client Upgrade for R11 SP4 to Access ADMS 2009" is
applied to Inventor 11, it should function like it did before.

To make Inventor 2009 work with your user libraries that you just put in the
2009 partition, they need to be updated by Inventor. We called this "update"
instead of "migration" so it would not be confused with the database
migration that happened in the ADMS Console. In Inventor go into the project
editor and press the configure content center libraries button on the lower
right. If you see any libraries in red, then they cannot be found on the
server. For missing standard content libraries you will need to install them
from the Inventor 2009 media, for user libraries you will need to copy them
to the 2009 partition. Once none of them are missing, you will see that your
user libraries need to be updated (they have a lightning bolt icon). Just
press the update button to start the process. If you made any changes to the
project you will need to back out and save the project first.

The update process will re-apply any edits you made to the new standard
content, and migrate the templates of any custom families. This process can
take a while.

For anyone still using MSDE or SQL 2000, there is hotfix to ADMS 2009 that
needs to be applied before starting the Inventor update. There was a problem
with our database migration to ADMS 2009 if it was done while on MSDE or SQL
2000; where the update would actually corrupt the library! In this
particular case, you were already using SQL Express (2005) so it's a
non-issue.

Hope this helps,

Another question on my upgrade plan.

I have in place at present a Backup script (attached) that runs every night and then we take TSM Backups.

Can I still use a script to Backup 2009 and what changes do I need to make. I can see that my program locations are obviously different but the Connectivity.VaultManager.exe does not appear.

Once again, all help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I might of answered my own question.

Had a look throught the ADMS 2008 Config Guide and found the backup script section.

I have attached my edited version, could someone take a look please.

Many Thanks

You don't need to "cycle" SQL Server anymore.

One option that may be of interest is the "no standard libraries" option (I
can remember the exact name of the switch but it is documented in the
ADMS-Console help. With this option the backup will skip the standard
libraries. The benefits of using it are time and diskspace. The caveat is
that if you ever need to restore, you will have to re-install the standard
content libraries from the Inventor media afterwards.

Thanks for the reply Dave,

I'll remove the cycle SQL parts, plus I think the option you're referring to is the -DBSC which I have put in my VaultOpt options.

Many Thanks

Hello,

I'm in the process of upgrading my server now.

I uninstalled my ADMS 5 and when installing ADMS 2009 I had an error regarding the CC Libraries.

When the install had finished I started the console and had the 'Keep' / 'Copy' Dialogue box and when executing this I got an error. (See attached image).

When looking for the AI2009 Libraries I couldn't find them in the SQL instance. I've extracted them from the DVD to the Data area and now when I try and attach them I get the same error.

I've installed the patch on my R11 client and all is well with that accessing the CC and my Vault button from R11 is working well.

But I take it I'll not be able to get my CC for AI 2009 due the the scenario above.

All help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Have there been any kind of "tuning" done to your AutodeskVault database
instance? The affinity mask and affinity IO mask are advanced options that
are used to allow SQL server to to move processes across CPUs and perform
writes to disk using a subset of the CPUs in the machine. I recommend
staying with the defaults since that is the configuration we test against.

If no "tuning" has been done, then I recommend opening up a support call
with your reseller.

Dave,

Thanks for your reply, it jogged my memory.

I wouldn't say there has been any 'tuning' of the AutodeskVault instance.

I'm not very conversant with SQL and have to rely on others for advice.

When we purchased our license for SQL it was a single processor license. My sever is fitted with 2 Dual Core Xeon 5130 and I was told that I would have to turn one of the processors off for use with SQL.

Not knowing where to do this I was pointed in the direction as shown in the attached image. I removed the Processor Affinity and I/O Affinity for CPU2 and CPU3.

All seemed to be working well till this AI2009 CC problem.

Having now put back the Affinities the AI2009 CC Libraries have now been successfully attached.
