Rename Files in Vault

I am having problems with renameing files in vault. I created a test part, and renamed it without a problem. I then created a assembly, and rename it, HOWEVER as soon as test part got used in the test assembly I could no longer rename it. Same thing happened when I created a test drawing and put in the test assembly. The wizard tries to do the rename but gets a error that say I need to contact support. Has anyone seen this before?

Pumbaa,

Could you tell me what version of Vault/PS you are using and what version of
Inventor etc. Im just guessing for now but maybe there is something wrong
with Vault knowing what version of IV to use to rename the files. You should
have no issues renameing a file that has a parent in the situation you
describe. Is there anything special about your test data set or is it very
simple?

Let me know and lets see if we can get this figured out for you.

Thanks,

Craig

Vault 10.2.4.0

Useing IV 10

Test data was very simple. Part with one feature, assembly with one part, drawing with only the part or only the assembly.

As long as each was seperate there was no issue.

Part...not used anywhere...can rename......as soon as the part was in a assembly, or a drawing then I can no longer rename.

Maybe not the same issue but make sure all the parts are checked in.

Well here is a new twist. I tried to delete the part and got a message that said.....cannot be deleted due to vaulting restrictions.......not sure but could this have to due with not being able to rename?

Log in as administrator and do an unconditional delete on the old file
versions.

I don't think it is related to your other issue, the likely reason for that message is..

Vault won't let you delete a part that other records are dependent upon. ie the idw or iam needs the part. You have to remove the dependencies before you can delete the part (delete the idw 1st), or with admin rights, do an unconditional delete.

Still looks like it has to due with the fact that it will not remane anything that has a link to something else.......part used in assembly, assembly used in drawing.......is there some "option" that could need to be turned on?

I can rename things with dependencies BUT if you were trying to rename to a name that had been used in the past, it could cause problems. ie I had a part "fred.ipt" did 3 versions, then renamed fred to "Barney". Two weeks later, I try to add a new part (or rename an existing) "Fred.ipt" While Fred is no longer listed in the browser, he exists in the history.

Do you have Tools>Admin>Options "Enforce Unique File names" turned ON? That may be why you can't rename to a name that has been used in the past. Do an advanced search for the name include previous versions and see if the name you are trying to apply already exists in the database.

Tried different names, and turning off the unique file name option. Still same error message.

Everything is checking in, old files deleted, nothing on the working directory.......the only thing that I can add is that I found out that the person before me here had product stream installed.......then removed it....not sure if that could be it?

You may need to get someone from Autodesk back into this thread (or start a new one to get the attention).

ProductStream Database (4.5) is different than the plain vault database (4.0) Knowing PS was in use on the machine before may be very important to troubleshooting issues now.
They will need to know what version of server software you are using & what version of Vault Explorer (Client) you are using.

While productStream works on top of Vault (sort of) I believe that it migrates the Vault database into a productstream type database.

You need to check with Adesk to learn the possible effects of that prior use of PS and if you can go backwards to a plain vault environment w/o reloading all your data. I think it takes more than just uninstalling the ProductStream software, but I haven't used PS in a while so I am not sure & don't want to mislead you.

I have managed to get a local Autodesk rep to come by today. I will post any thing if he can make any headway into this. Thanks

well still no success with the rename issue the best suggestion that he could give was to relead vault. Anyone from Autodesk care to give a better solution?

The cause of this error is usually related to updating the references inside
the inventor file. Which may indicate a problem with the file(s). Can you
try an even simpler test? Just create an assembly and part with no geometry
and add to the vault at the same time. Then try to rename the part.

Thanks,

Ray.
