Proper Upgrade Path 2012 basic to 2015 Pro

So I have final got the servers and methods down to push through my upgrade to get current and go pro.

I have successfully taken a backup from the basic 2012 Vault and restored it to the new server running basic 2014.

My intent is then to install Vault 2014 Pro over this (first you move up release year, then product level).

However, my true goal is to go to 2015 Vault Pro before I begin developing Pro use.

But I am a bit confused on the proper path to that. At the moment the new server is on Basic ADMS 2014 with no Service Patches.

I  know with Vault 2014 Pro there were two paths for service patches:

SP1 to SP2

SP1 to Subscription Release to SR SP1

I had at first built my server with the second method before I realized I had to step thru Basic 2014 first when coming from Basic 2012.

So since I am trying to go to 2015 Pro (which I assume encompasses all that the SR 2014 release had), should I just install 2014 Pro over my 2014 Basic, no SPs, and then install 2015 Pro over that?

i would do what you said instead of installing all the service packs for 2014 if your just going to go to 2015 anyway
probably be easier

It sounds like you're on the right track.

From Vault basic 2014, upgrade to 2014 Professional.

Then upgrade to 2015 Professional.

We strongly suggest reading help and the ReadMe files for both:

Thanks I have been through those guides already and have been making backups and testing my new environment.

At this point I am pretty solid on the environment I will be moving to. All seems to work well with the restore and validation process for the first test backup/restore that I have done.

My real question he is what the release contain.

As you know with ADMS 2014 their were two paths to go down with the SPs, Subscription Release or not. In going the Subscription Release route you were getting the New Thin Client, etc.

My question is does 2015 itself contain all of those enhancements? If so I should be able to take raw installed 2014 Basic (no SPs) and restore my 2012 Basic Backup (which I have already done in testing). Then upgrade in place to 2014 Pro, then to 2015 Pro. And I will have all the enhancements that the Sub releases had within them, correct?

So one more question that is very important to how I proceed. I would like to be able to get us to 2015 Pro before I go to AU this year but I DO NOT what to define or make users start going through any lifecyles yet. So just because the product level is at pro, would not it still act like the basic vault did as long as I have not defined or forced any of the file lifecyle workflows yet? Basically everything would still be in a WIP state as it is in Vault Basic. We will be using File Lifecyles not Items when I do defined the methods. So the two main questions here:

  1. To the end user, will a 2015 Pro ADMS allow them to interact with it in the same way they are used to with Basic ADMS 2012? That way there is time to work with developing the proper methods while already being at being at the proper product level.
  2. Is there any problem with a 2015 Pro ADMS running a 2014 client base? I will bring up the client base to 2015 at some point but there is much more to be concerned about on the Vault side before that happens.
