Project Thunderdome

Can someone please explain to me how this thing is supposed to work?

I have installed it on 2 PC's, set the configured the user folders, i backed up the administrator settings and moved them all over to the default folders. I then expected these to be pushed to the users folder when they logged into Vault. But nothing appears to be happening.

Also how is the extensions folder meant to be used? Is that feature only supported with Vaults that don't enforce unique file names? because inevitably dll's from one extension can have the same name as dll's in another.

This is doing my nut in so any help would be appreciated.

Right so I realised that by moving my administrator settings that i backed up from the administrator users folder, the security permissions weren't allowing 'everyone' to read them. So the add-in on the 2nd machine couldn't see any files to push.

However, for some reason not all of my custom views are being pushed through. I have 3 project explorer custom views and only 2 of them are being pushed. I checked out the Default folder, over wrote all of the VaultSettings sub folders with the ones from my local 'Appdata' folder then checked them back in. but nothing changed.

Any ideas?

Sorry for the confusion.  That's that sort of thing that happens when programmers are allowed to write the entire app on their own.  Usually we have Product Designers to insure that the software is usable.

Regarding your question.

I agree that it's strange for only 2 out of 3 things to get pushed. My experience has been that either all items come done or none of them do.  Are the 3 files all in the same folder?  Can you post a screenshot?

The extensions folder:

In Vault 2012, all extensions, such as custom commands, live in %programdata%\Autodesk\Vault 2012\Extensions.  Seach extension gets it's own sub folder under that.  If the extension is something you want to share, you can just upload the entire folder for that extension.  So you are basically mapping Thunderdome's Extensions folder to the one in ProgramData.

If two extensions use the same DLL, you only need to upload 1 to Vault.  It doesn't matter which one.  At run time only one of the DLLs will get loaded anyway.

I'm not sure what 3 files you want a screen shot of.. but I performed a search on my _Default folder that I have 'got' from Vault onto my C drive so you can see all of the files that exist. I don't see any individual files that relate to individual custom views.

I have also compared the folders & files in my local appdata folder to the one in vault and therefore in my vault workspace, the only thing i could see that was different was the lack of a searches folder under the Vault Common folder set.

ok i've figured something out. The custom views musn't be saved in one of the files backed up and pushed through by Thunderdome. The only time they are pushed through is when they are in use or active on a folder in the clients project explorer. Then the custom view gets pushed through.

So when i created the 3rd custom view (the one that was missing) i must have switched back to another custom view on the folder i used to create the 3rd one. Therefore, locally my custom view was saved, but it was not active.

So the question is, where are the custom views saved when they aren't actively in use within the project explorer?

The custom view data seems to be stored in the XML files in the %appData%\Autodesk\[Vault Product]\Servers\[Server Name]\Vaults\[Vault Name]\Objects folder, which should already be part of Thunderdome's backup.

If you look in ViewStyles.xml, you should see your views.  One explaination for your problem is that you backed up right after creating the view.  View data is saved when you exit Vault Explorer.  So if you want to back up to Thunderdome, you need to exit and log back in.

no the custom view had been definitely been created a number of days before hand. So there is some other idiosyncrasy affecting this. I think the custom view has to be active on a folder somewhere at some point for it to be saved to the xml.

I was hoping to see the option to deploy search definitions to all users. Do I overlook something or isn't it supported (yet) ?

If you are talking about Saved Searches, then yes.  Thunderdome supports that.... at least the 2013 and 2014 versions do.

Good to hear that it supports the deployment of search definitions.

But how do I select this option?

If you have saved searches, it should be picking them up.  If not, then Thunderdome won't show the option.

OK, your message is very clear. But not my situation...

How can I have saved searches but not displayed in Thunderdome?

I am logged in as Vault user (admin), not a windows account! Can this be an issue?

This looks to be a bug in Thunderdome.  I'll need more information before I can put out a fix.

The saved searches are stored as files under %appData\Autodesk\VaultCommon\Servers\Services_Security_1_28_2013\[vault server]\Vaults\[vault name]\Searches

(the parts need to be changed based on your Vault deployment)

Can you check that folder and see of you have a bunch of files there?  You should have one for each saved search. You can send me a private message if you don't to the entire group.

Thanks

I have a similar situation where the create deployment box remains devoid of any selectable items after selecting the folder to create the deployment in.

I am trying to share the grid views which i have with the rest of the project team members.
