The key step that you took to free up the space was to turn off the
properties (including docThumbnails). In Vault 4.x, these thumbnails can
take up a considerable amount of room, as you've seen.
In v5, we have reduced the space consumed by thumbnails significantly.

Hi folks.
After reading through some interesting threads regarding the osql shrink
database utility, I gave it a go on a test vault to see the results for
myself. To say I was astounded would be an understatement.
ADMS/Vault 4.5 running on MSDE, with a filestore of around 5GB (33,000
files). I turned a number of the file proerties (including docthumbnails) to
not in use, and performed a re-index, which left me with a 1.58GB database
file.
I then executed the osql utility, and mere minutes later, my hefty database
had shrunk to an incredible 215MB.
Everything appears to be working normally, but I find it hard to believe
that there was so much wasted space in th DB.
Has anyone done any more thorough tests to establish the stability of such
shrunken vaults?
It seems great, but I'm more than a little worried about performing it on a
live vault, in case it causes instability in the long run.
Any thoughts, words of wisdom?
