New Install of Vault - which SQL ?

Hi,

I'm just about to install Vault, and am trying to specify a new server for
it.
Probably a Dell PE2850, and I was going to buy it with SQL installed on it.

I'm getting confusing info from the AutoDesk web site.

One page says Vault 4 does not support Microsoft SQL Server 2005.
Is Vault 4 the current latest?

Dell want to supply the server with SQL already installed.
I don't know which of the many confusing versions of SQL to get.

AutoDesk documentation talks only of 'upgrading' to SQL, and even suggests
that you can't install vault on an existing SQL.

I've got 20 users, about 500,000 drawings, use Inventor 10 etc.

Any better info out there.

Martyn,

Vault 4 supports SQL Server 2000 (Enterprise and Standard editions). SQL
Server 2005 will be supported for Vault 5, but not Vault 4. Even if Dell
ships the computer/server with SQL pre-installed it won't be pre-installed
with the AutodeskVault instance, so I'm not sure I see the benefit of them
pre-installing it for your system.

The Vault 4 Advanced Configuration Guide on the Autodesk web site provides
details for preinstalling SQL Server or upgrading to SQL Server from MSDE.

Hope that clears things up for you.

Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob,
When's 5 out, if it's soon I might as well wait a bit.
The only benefit of buying the server with SQL preinstalled is there's more
chance of Dell supporting it properly if they supplied it all.

I'll get the Guide you mentioned; but I'm still not sure of the order of
events.
Should I buy the server h/w on its own first?
Then install what?
I know I'll need the SQL version, not the little MSDE one.
And there are lots of versions of SQL as well.

Martyn,

You can pre-install Microsoft SQL Server 2000 now. If you talk to a
Microsoft VAR you should ask them about an 'assurance plan' that allows you
to purchase SQL 2005, but get SQL 2000 now so you can use it until you're
ready for Vault 5.

Either way, the Advanced Configuration Guide is here:

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?id=5422438&linkID=5091031&siteID=123112

This documents how to install SQL first with the AUTODESKVAULT instance and
SA password.

After it's done you install Autodesk Data Management Server 4 (Vault server
components) and it will use the AutodeskVault instance and you can install
directly into full SQL without ever using MSDE.

It's not as difficult as it may seem. Your Autodesk VAR can help you do this
or you could even do it yourself. I would still recommend getting some Vault
training before putting it into production for your company.

Good luck!

We just installed a new Dell server PowerEdge 2800. We told Dell that we needed SQL 2000 now and the ability to upgrade later. We received SQL 2000 and 2005 both. They shipped separately from the server. Our sales rep recommended that we not purchase the OEM version of SQL because it is legal only on the machine it is originally installed. I installed vault after SQL was installed. Vault installed with MSDE and I then ran the SQL setup.bat from the install disk to upgrade the AUTODESK instance to SQL 2000.

How do I decide which version ('Edition') of SQL Server 2005 to use?
'Express' is too small, 'Enterprise' too big (and expensive).

Can't see much difference between 'Workgroup' and 'Standard'.

I've got 20 users, about 500,000 drawings, and I'm about to upgrade to
Inventor 11, which comes with Vault 5.

If you are still using Vault 4 then you can not install SQL 2005.
Check your SQL license to verify you have the license that will allow you to
install SQL 2000 until you are ready to upgrade to SQL 2005.

After you get Vault 5, upgrade your Vault installation then you can upgrade
SQL 2000 to SQL 2005.

As I said earlier in the post, I've not yet got any version of Vault at all.
I'm about to install it.
It's going to be Vault 5, on Windows2003 Server, with SQL 2005.

My main (A) question is ; -
How do I decide which version ('Edition') of SQL Server 2005 to use?
'Express' is too small, 'Enterprise' too big (and expensive).
Can't see much difference between 'Workgroup' and 'Standard'.
I'm specifying a server to put it on, and want to order SQL 2005 (Version
??) with it.
I've got 20 users, about 500,000 drawings, and I'm about to upgrade from
Inventor 10 to Inventor 11, which comes with Vault 5.

My next question (B) will be ; -
What order should I install things, some sources say SQL first, some say
'Data Management Server' (is that the same as 'Vault' ?) first.

Here's a decent summary of the different SQL Server 2005 editions:
http://www.sqlservercentral.com/columnists/bknight/comparisonofsqlserver2005editions.asp

It appears to me that the most significant differences between these 2
editions is the number of CPUs they can utilize (2 vs. 4), and the amount of
memory they'll utilize (3GB vs. unlimited).

To answer question B. It is easier if you install the Data Management
Server first.
This will install the MSDE version which you can upgrade to SQL 2005.

You know, a white paper on this would be helpful. Installing and configuring the proper version of SQL, understanding CAL's, understanding enterprise backup solutions such as Veritas Netbackup instead of using the manual backup client, etc. This documentation MIGHT be adequate for small to medium-size businesses, but not for large user communities, particularly ones that haven't used Vault before.
