Missing Vault Arx dll

I have installed Inventor Series 10, and Mechanical Desktop, etc. along with Vault4. Whenever I try to use Mechanical Desktop as Autocad 2006, I get the message (at the command line)

C:\Program Files\12\vaac_startupUI.arx cannot find a dll or other file that it needs.

Otherwise, it loads fine. Is there supposed to be a Vault menu item in the File menu pulldown list?
Thank you,
Mike

Looking at the path it seems like the install is strange for some reason
- I'm not sure where the "12" comes from - this is the location of my
ARX file

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\MDT 2006

do you have any idea where that "12" is coming from? Is that the
install location of MDT for you?

Thanks for the reply. Because I did not install Inventor Series 10 in the default C:/Program Files directory, but instead on a different partition (same w/ Max, MDT, Mechanical, and Autocad) I think that the installer has to create these directories in the C: drive Program files folder so other components of the installs for each app can have a shared folder on the OS drive. I also have a 123, 1234, and 12345 folder, all of which have exactly the same stuff in them. It's also possible they were created when I tried to repair/add components in my efforts to get Vault to work, I dunno. But Each of these, including the 12 folder, seem to have a complete host of dll's - do I have to add these directories to ACAD's path? The arx app is loading, it just can't find the required dll's.
Any help much appreciated,
Mike

Among the many files that vaac_startupUI.arx relies on in order to
successfully load in to ACM/MDT/ACAD include these two--

vaac_service.arx
connectivity.common.sharedlib.dll

These should be in the same folder. Does your installation show these?

If you are daring, you could install the Dependency Walker program
(http://www.dependencywalker.com/). If you open vaac_startupUI.arx in
that program, it will list all of its dependent DLLs and highlight those
that are missing. This is a Microsoft tool, so it should be safe to run
on your machine. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dependency_walker

You should not have to go through that process, the Vault client
installer should put all the required files into the right location
(C:\Program Files\12 in your case). Check for those two files I
mentioned earlier to start. You should also see a number of other
connectivity.* and vaac* files.

Thanks, David!

I've attached the Dependencywalker file generated by that program - I can't make much sense of it, and I wholehaeartedly agree that I shouldn't have to go through this. I've also attached a txt file generated by a dos dir of the directory in question. I also have a call into my VAR, but it doesn't seem hopeful- they said thety would cal back in a couple of hours 2 days ago...

Dependencywalker file too large...

Michael,

I do not see the Connectivity.Common.Sharedlib.dll file - chances are
that is the missing dependency.

See if that file is in some other folder. Manually search your 123,
1234, etc. folders or use Windows Explorer to search for it. If it finds
one, copy it to your 12 folder.

It sounds like you have a lot of duplication of files. You might want to
uninstall everything, clean up those extra folders and start clean.

Is your Inventor Vault add-in working ok?

To answer an older question of yours--

> Is there supposed to be a Vault menu item in the File menu pulldown list?

Yes. That is one of the things that the vaac_startupUI module does. You
will know it is loading when you see that menu.

When you do a save in the dependencywalker you can select the file type
to be *.txt instead of *.dwi. It is a MUCH smaller file. 🙂

Thanks. I've tried re-installing Vault using the Control Panel add/remove programs routine, but it does not add back in the dll you cited.
If I do go the complete un-install/re-install route, I have (3) questions:
1. Will my authorization codes from last installs of Inventor Series 10 amd Max 8 still be valid?
2. Is there a certain order in which I should re-install, service packs I need to add/order to add.
3. Since I dutifully uninstalled my AutoCAD 2006 license, how will Inventor Series 10 installer know that this is a legitimate crossgrade install, and will I get my AutoCAD 2006 flavor of MDT back?
Thanks again, and sorry to keep pestering you, but this seems to be the only place I can get any answers.

PS
My Inventor Vault add-in is working, but not the Autocad/MDT/Mechanical or the Max 8.

Did you do a search of your C:\ drive to see if a copy of that file was
laying around somewhere?

I would think the authorization codes should still be valid. Since you
have a number of good questions I am not an expert in, it might be
better to try and find answers to these from the support folks -
assuming you have a Subscription of some sort.

If it becomes too much trouble, instead of reinstalling -everything- it
may be enough to just reinstall the Vault 'clients'. The file in
question comes from that install, not the CAD products.

Thanks again. I finally found the answer:

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/item?id=6064286&linkID=4517338&siteID=123112

TS1053578

All I had to do was un-install the entire Vault application, re-install beginning with the 3DS Max Vault add-in, then one by one install the Vault Clients for MDT, Mechanical, and Inventor, apply Vault SP2, and Voila! they all worked! Of course, this routine is not documented in the Vault manual that ships with the apps, and I only found this TS by accident, but there it was.

That's terrific Michael. There is a lot of good information in the
Knowledge Base articles. Glad to hear they helped you.
Vault on!
