Item Number Based on Filename

How can I have the item number be based upon the filename?

I found a blog post about doing this using "Component Name"; problem is, the file extension is included for the Inventor filetypes (guess that's why it was demonstrated using a word doc)!

Thanks,

Steve

I wrote the post - no trick! Promise 🙂

I just tried this again with ONLY the component name mapped to part
number... Extension is not included.

What version of software are you running?
Can you send a screen shot of your mappings?
Can you send a screen shot of your assign item dialog (like mine?)

Wow, fast reply - thanks.

However, even with your suggestion it didn't work 😞

We are running Inventor 2008 and Productstrem 2008.

See attached screenshots.

I'm stumpped - I tried a few different things to break mine and couldn't do
it... I even added a file via drag and drop which can mess lots up...

does this happen for every file? what about DWGs? Word Docs? Text files?

just looking for more clues.

Brian,

The problem seems to be tied to the Inventor files; DOC, DWG, JPG, etc. seem fine.

I even tried this on a second test machine (adms and clients on same computer). This was a brand new vault; including knowledgevault and a user vault. The same problem 😞

I created a backup of the ADMS which I uploaded to here: http://download.yousendit.com/22DE3DD320DBAE80

Hopefully you have the opportunity to restore my backup onto your machine to try on your end.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve

I was able to get this to work. I simply check the file out, saved it in
Inventor 2008 and then checked it back in (it was already in 2008 format but
it still wanted to save... I'm not sure why.

When I checked it back in it worked - no extension.

How are you adding these files to the Vault? (the Inventor files?) Drag and
drop?

I have it restored and I'm looking into it - one thing I would do is use
this project file instead - this will ensure if you use Autoloader in the
future that you'll be compatible - it's my #1 recommendation.

Also - don't add new library paths or modify anything. Just place
everything in a sub folder of one of these two (three if you count content
center files) paths.

Brian,

Thanks for your suggestion regarding Autoloader and folder names; definately something to consider.

In regards to the item numbering based on filename; where you able to restore the sample vault that I had sent to you and if so, what were the results of your testing?

Thanks,

Steve

Hello

Can you confirm whether it is possible to map the item number to the filename now in Vault Pro 2011 as I cannot find the field Component name any more.

I wish to map a the filename of a PDF as the item number

Yes, it is possible.

You need to add an additional Initial Mapping to Component Name property.

See my attached screenshot.

Can you do this with a TIF file? I'm using VP 2012. I created a property called Component Name but can't seem to map to it. I would like to take a whole lot of legacy TIF files from an old system and put them in the Vault. If I could map the filename to Item that would be great - Or even if I add a custom vault property to the tif file and then map that to the Item.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

You should be able to map to the filename of the file and use it as the item number.

Other properties on a TIF file I am not sure about.

Hello community !

Could I have more information about the extension that remains in the Item Number when the file is an .ipt ?

Is there a way to set a different behavior ?
