Initial import of versions?

Is there a way to import versions of the same file?

The users had a manual system, to id the versions, concatenating the version number at the end of the name. Ex. file1 corresponding to version 1, file2 to version 2 and so on.

Now, they are going to start using Vault Collaboration AEC to import their dwg files, and they are asking if there is at least a manual way to import each of those files with their previous versions to vault.

Regards,

HI There,

This is certainly possible - from a procedural perspective it would be a matter of identifying and grouping the files by version, renaming the files to remove the appended revision, and bulk loading these in order to construct a historical record.

Depending on the type and quantity of files this could prove to be unrealistic from a manual perspective so you may need to look at available tools to streamline the process.

A quick question regarding the use of the term "Versions" here too.  I am assuming that this actually refers to "Revisions" or design milestones - not every saved iteration of the files through the design process?  Revising the documents as you load them is the best process and in some ways may be simpler or more difficult depending on the approach.

Thanks Allan.

You are correct, what the users have are revisions and not versions. Anyway if those revisions are loaded as versions, it would be ok for the users.

Is there a way in Autoloader to load diferent versions of a file.

I just tried to load an existing file in Vault, using autoloader, and shows "Unseccessful as a different version of the file already exist in the Vault".

May be there is a setting to change this behaviour. If so would be great.

Thanks,

Once you have loaded the first "layer" of data in the Vault you would now need to be checking the data out and back in to update versions / revisions.  The Autoloader is not of much use at this point, you would need to look at something like Inventor's Task Scheduler or AutoCAD check in folder tools.

Depending on the size of the task here it may be worth while reaching out to Autodesk Consulting and look at what automation tools they will have to assist.
