Filestore on a Linux Server

There have been a few posts here regarding using a Linux server as Vaults file store - and sadly none have been positively answered. Does anyone have a definitive answer as to whether this is even technically possible? There are plenty of good reasons for using Linux for this task, but it would be good to get a "Yes - try this..." - or "No - Don't waste any more time on trying." type of answer.

Hi Peter,

I am not aware of any testing done in this area -
so it would probably not be considered a supported configuration from Autodesk's
point of view.

The bigger question though is whether it even makes
sense to use a separate file store server. You would be paying extra performance
costs for network access between the application (web) server and the file store
server in this case - and those costs often outweigh any other benefits you
might be looking for. Possibly a better solution would be to keep the filestore
on a separate disk on the application server - this would offload the I/O costs
from the main drive thus providing much of the benefit without the
downside.

One way of approaching this would be to start with
the filestore on the same machine. Measure the performance of the machine and
start looking for bottlenecks. If there are I/O bottlenecks, maybe offloading
the filestore is something to explore. In that case, ADMS console provides full
support for moving filestores of existing vaults at any time. However, my
experience in general is that filestore I/O is not normally the big throughput
bottlenecks on most installations.

Thanks for the reply Paul - and I take your point. However, the question here really isn't about the sense of putting the filestore on a remote server. It's well documented that this setup is not the preferred solution, so rather than explain the logic, I'll just say that in this case there is a solid technical & financial justification behind the request. It's whether it's achievable that is the real question.



Unfortunately, I think that until the we can establish whether or not a filestore on a Linux server would actually work, the much-needed Vault implementation will remain stalled. Does anyone have a "yes/no" answer so the discussion can be closed?

Hi Peter,

The simple answer is 'no'. Autodesk does not
test - thus will not support that configuration.
