File Status Icon Question

I'm trying to understand what the red icon with the check in it is telling me. The help says that it usually means that I "started with a version for (from?) vault that was older than the latest version, and then checked it out to promote it to the latest".
I think this is saying that I got a previous version from vault and then checked it out.

Am I reading this correctly? AFAIK, I have never done this (yet), but I still have these icons in my browser. I don't understand how I could NOT have the latest version if I have the file checked out to me.

Thanks,
Kirk

Kirk,

Are you seeing this icon inside Inventor or inside Vault? Also, are you the
only one that is working on these particular parts or assemblies? I am
speculating that what you have in your working folder is out of date.
Either by thinking you are in the working folder when you are not (I do that
a lot) or someone has checked out the file and checked it back in prior to
you checking the file out again.

Let me know if I am off here 🙂

Thanks,
Jim

I am seeing the same thing in both. There are others working on the files also. I am sure what I have in my workspace is out of date because I can right click and chose "Show History". There will be a version checked in by another user (see reply below for a screen shot).

I can understand how the file can be out of date, but I don't understand how it can be checked out by me AND be out of date.

Question-
how it can be checked out by me AND be out of date?

Answer -
if during check-out the option not to get latest copy is selected.
or
file is checked out to folder other than working folder

When you checkout a file, vault in its wisdom loads the local verson and not the latest verson from vault.
You need to make sure you use get latest version
ps I have found that "get latest version" is not reliable and sometimes have to resort to deleting the local version before using "get lastest version"
NB
How to corrupt vault files
1 Have files on local machine not checked out (version 1)
2 Another user checks out one of these files makes changes and checks in (version 2)
3 You check out the changed file make no changes then check in
4 You have just overwrite the wanted file version 2 with the outdated file version 1
5 This can happen if you check out an assembly using the default setting of "all children" and becomes very hard to pick the problem
( BRING BACK SEMI ISOLATED )

In step 3, when you check out the file, does vault not tell you that the local version "is OLDER than the latest version"?

I have my prompts set to ALWAYS get the latest, thus avoiding overwriting the latest version.

If you are using Vault 5, and not seeing this prompt, look at File>Vault>Options and see it this prompts resonse is set to "No to All".
