Design Data duplicate files in Vault

Why does the 2014 Inventor Design Data have duplicate files in Vault? I am trying to eliminate duplicates and not sure what to do with these files.

Weld.xml is another one which is duplicated. It's a PITA, it has been for years. I'm not sure why Autodesk haven't changed it yet.

Can anyone from Autodesk suggest if it's possible to deal with this while having Unique file naming turned on in Vault?

Hi Wade,

I reached out to a Vault specialist regarding this issue. He has explained that these files get uploaded from Inventor, therefore you'll need to understand if these files are localized and unique for each part and assembly. In other words, check your standards and see if they have made any of these standards local to the file templates, rather than pointing out to a standard template location.

Please let me know if this helps and if we can assist you further.

Thank you!

Hey Jess,

Thanks for chipping in here. Any chance of getting the Vault specialist to comment on here. I don't think they have understood the question. These files are support files for Inventor. The Inventor dev team have created this situation where there are a ridiculous number of files with the same names in different directories.. it's not an issue until you store the Inventor Templates & Design Data folder (the support files & styles) inside a Vault with Unique File Names turned on (Which is the best way for it to be, from a data management standpoint).

This is an issue I have come across a number of times in my Vault career and continue to more & more in my new job. Hence my vested interest.

Thanks Scott for clarifying that.

Jessica: This was a clean upload of Inventor Design Data from a recent install of PDS 2014 Ultimate. We have made no modifications to this whatsoever. This data was uploaded from the default desktop location by our VAR into Vault.

Hello Wade,

This is the response that I have received in regards to your post:

The files in question are duplicates in the design data folder but are for use in the Design Accelerator reports that’s why they are in multiple locations. They are located under sub-folders and are used  for the category they’re under. In looking at the image supplied with multiple files all are in different folders. The same file works for different reports that the Design Accelerator generates.

When adding the Design Data folder to Vault you would get duplicate files if Unique Files is off or if a “Find Duplicate” is done from Vault explorer. These files need to be in the folder there in and are not duplicates being generated. Just one file of the same name doing the same work for difference instances.

I apologize I don't have a specialist first hand but I appreciate you working with me anyway.

I hope this helps.

Thank you,

Thanks for passing that on. I personally understood this already.... The Inventor dev team need to change the design data structure so it works with Unique File Naming in Vault. I'll create a thread in the Dyson beta forum. I confess I was being a bit of a smarty pants about this, I was hoping for an acceptable solution from your contact, knowing there really isn't one.

Cheers.

Not really what I wanted to hear I guess but thanks for the answers. One workaround I would be happy with would be some way of excluding the Design Data folder from my find duplicates report. Anyone know of a way to do this?

Just Have A Look At Free Duplicate File Finder Form Ashisoft.

Kimson, thanks for making this your first post. While that tool would be useful in some circumstances. These files aren't actually duplicates, they just have the same file name while fulfilling different requirements.

Unfortunately this seems to still be an issue. Maybe one day there will be a solution:

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/vault-ideas/enhance-management-of-inventor-design-data-and-templates-...

On to the Inventor forums to ask how people manage their Design Data if not in Vault...

It's crazy that day to day quality of life issues like this still aren't sorted with the integration between Vault & Inventor! It really just goes to show how out of touch the Vault product & development teams are from the actual needs of Inventor Vault users.

Vault 2024.1 is out and 10 years later, there is an option to exclude the Design Data folder from the duplicate file check.
