Custom Item Numbering Schema - Parts take parent as part of number

We are looking at starting to use items in vault pro 2013.

Ultimately we will be utilizing PLM360 to manage the generation and status tracking for use downstream of the design group the Item numbers assigned to our equipment and parts that we make and track in our inventory.

Therefore the part number of our top level or stand alone parts will get entered into the .ipt or .iam file at the time of file creation and then mapped during Item Creation in Vault. So far no problem.

We are not a manufacturer so we have no internal processes that require us to track the parts of a weldment assembly. The first simple answer is set the parts of the weldment bom structure to Phantom. Alas they disappear from the part list of the dwg file. No good.

So we are faced with having them get numbers assigned during item creation (as since we do not typically fill out the part number field and let inventor give it the file name. And yes we could use a file naming process to give unique part numbers to these non tracked items. But looking to let the "System" do that for consistency and less human error.

So the Question is:

Is there a way to create an Numbering Schema in Vault that can look to the assembly file to get the first field and then auto gen the last have of the number? Using iProperties or other field look-up method?

Example

BOM Lvl File Name--------Item Number

1 weldment.iam------------123456789

1.1 weldment_plate-------123456789-001

1.2 weldment_side--------123456789-002

Regards
