Creating Vault Revisions

This may sound simple, but how do you create revisions in Vault that will drive revision numbers in Inventor part and assembly files?  I'm able to have the part/assembly revision numbers show up in Vault under "Rev Number" but now I need Vault to drive the Revisions, not Inventor.

....So I've found how to update the "revision" field in Vault using the life cycle definitions and release processes, but mine won't update when I change the "state". I think it might be because the "revision" field is not initially populated in Vault. Does anyone know how to populate that field?

So after some reading, I realised that the revision field should be initially populated automatically when a file is created and checked in to Vault.  My problem is that I just upgraded to Vault Workgroup and was trying to do all these revisions with files that were first created in Vault Basic.
