On change state from Work in Progress to Release I want to change the Category from Engineering to Production.
Is it possible to apply rules to trigger this.

I have tried applying an rule in the Production Category – State -> Is-> Released... with no effect.

Hello,

Since categories manage the lifecycle and revision assignment for files, it
is not possible to change the category with the change of a state.

What is your ultimate goal of making this change? Maybe we can find a better
way to do what you are trying to accomplish.

I agree with Adam.

It appears that you are trying to use category in a similar way to how
states are used.
I would suggest renaming your State to "Released to Production" or
something similar.

Though it is possible to change the category of a file, the intent of
the Categories is not to be used a "sub-state". It is a classification
type that should be somewhat static for the file. As we move forward
with adding more 'behaviors' to the Vault system, Categories will most
likely be the vehicle for those behaviors and therefore changing the
category on the fly will have more and more negative effects.

Because of these reasons I would discourage anyone from trying to use
Categories as a type of state for the file.

Intention of our company regarding vault categories is as follows:

Let objects (files and Items) live the easy life (in base category with simplified workflow) during the devlopement stage but as soon as it comes to preparing them to production the data should undergo some "must" procedures (checks, approves and so on) thus workflow should become taugher. Even more - different objects should go different roads.

We hope to achieve this by changing object's category. The category/workflow should change automaticaly as soon as some flag property (let say "Title") changes to comply one of predefined values (starts with "Me..." for mechanical parts "Mo..." for mouldings, "El..." for electrical parts etc.). But there seems to be problem with auto-setting category. With file rules set up only freshly added files got their special categories. Updated files are all left in default category.

The rule for Items seems not working at all. Moreovere there is no possibility to switch item category manually - the "change category" command is grayed-out.

Please comment.

PS: It is about VP2012 with Sept1 multi-hotfix installed.
