Why do careless, carefree, and uncaring not mean the same thing?
Why do we park on a driveway and drive on a parkway?
If an orange tree was to be grown on an aircraft carrier, would it produce naval oranges?
Certainly not, MistressOfTheDorkness....

May have already been answered, but here it is.
Driveways were originally a lot longer than the dinky little city/suburban car ramps we know today. On an expansive property, one needed a path, or "driveway", on which to travel from the official road to the primary residence (or cluster of buildings). For large properties, such as farms, these paths could be miles long. Driveways date back to horse-drawn carriages.
Parkways (unlike highways or expressways) were originally designed as scenic routes, where a family could pull over to the side of the road, park (hence the name), and have a picnic while watching the other drivers pass through. That's why parkways are frequently lined with trees. The planning of such roads took place largely before people realized the negative impact that car exhaust could have on human health. (I did recently see a couple folks sunning themselves on beach chairs by the side of a local parkway. No sign of a parked car though, so they probably lived nearby.)
