Why do careless, carefree, and uncaring not mean the same thing?
Why do we park on a driveway and drive on a parkway?
If an orange tree was to be grown on an aircraft carrier, would it produce naval oranges?

Is not a Possom just a big whitish Rat?
That's why we chose it.

The actual animal silhouette depicted on the sign should be irrelevant, I think. I can see someone driving along, noticing a 'Possum Crossing' sign, and then swerving violently off the road to avoid a raccoon. He sues the town and in court claims that he was alert for possums but they didn't mention anything about raccoons! All of those signs should be 'universalized' to "Critter Crossing".

Works for me. Actually according to the MUTCD* the only available animal crossing related signs are; Deer, Cow, Horse with Rider, Bear, Sheep, Bighorn Sheep, Donkey, Elk, Moose and Wild Horse. As text you can have Large Animal Crossing.
All the Duck, Raccoon, Possum, etc. are demanded by the local fuzzy critter patrols.

That looks like an elephant with it's trunk up in the air (I guess that would be a short trunk though).

Why do people say "I could care less"? It seems like it should be "I couldn't care care less".
The first means that I care some because it's possible to actually care less than I do. Whereas the second says that I care so little that it's not possible for me to care any less than I do.

Don, it IS "couldn't care less" - well, it is in the motherland.
I think I've already posted this somewhere on here but didn't get the rise I was expecting...

The use of silent letter that in no way make a word different if spelled without, other than being outside of the status-quo.
Why lanquages need letters that sound alike, both singularly and plural.
