What disappears when stroked deliberately but remains when stroked idly?

You know where I'm coming from, Allen.  I think the last guess was "String, or nothing!"  (In the book, anyway.)  It just came to mind when I noticed this thread again; the idea of the riddle being all important.

With that said, there's a few riddles here with no answer, or with unconfirmed guesses lying around.  We need the riddlers to come back and put us out of our misery!

Close, no cigar...

A beard.  Stroked deliberately with a razor, stroked idly whilst musing.
