Okay, for those of us that are sole proprietors & rely on Autodesk products, this is just cruel.
We faithfully entered into a subscription with Autodesk, paid our invoices on time & this is what we get for our loyalty? A $250 increase in our subscriptions for a suite containing products that we have never, nor will ever use.
I am not a consulting engineer & will never use the MEP & Structural products contained in this new suite that I am forced to pay for just for the privilege of being able to use my subscription.
Gee, thanks a lot, Autodesk. You've made me feel real special.
OK.
I'm not saying you're wrong. But since there are a number of Autodesk products and Suites containing different products. We'd have a better understanding of what you're going through if you named your product and suite. Also a link to the description of the new policy your talking about would be helpful.
I'm a Civil 3D user and we were not forced to purchase a suite.

Hi Allen,
The message I got from Autodesk was this:
Dear Autodesk Subscription Customer, We would like to inform you that effective January 7, 2013, Autodesk is discontinuing the following suites:
As an Autodesk customer with AutoCAD Revit Architecture Suite, AutoCAD Revit MEP Suite, or AutoCAD Revit Structure Suite software on a current* Subscription contract you will automatically be upgraded** to Autodesk® Building Design Suite Premium. You will receive an email notification when Building Design Suite Premium becomes available for download on Subscription Center at www.autodesk.com/subscriptionlogin (on or after January 7, 2013). If you have elected to receive box shipments of products, you will receive a USB drive containing Building Design Suite Premium. Autodesk Building Design Suite Premium includes:

I currently hold a subscription for Revit Architecture Suite. |
I don't know what your needs are. But if you only need Revit, tell your reseller to downgrade your subscription to Autodesk Revit Architecture 2013, a standalone application.
Whenever Autodesk comes up with a new and simplified upgrade policy. It means they "simply" want more of your money. This will be my 30th year using their products. So I've seen quite a few.

We need something like this for AutoCAD and REVIT:
Yeah, I'm not thrilled either.
I use the Revit MEP Suite. Most of our work is still being managed through AutoCAD/AutoCAD MEP, but, we're doing a transition from CAD to BIM, so, 10% of our campus is already RVT.
Only having the one license on my budget means the total cost increase isn't huge, but, as a percentage of subscription increase... it's enough to make me mighty irritated.
We only need simple AutoCAD and Revit but now have to buy all of these other products as well. The cost of just getting the two as stand alone products is just slightly less that the suite we are being forced into.
AD should offer a build your own suite option. They can even tell us we have to include a certain number of products... but can choose from a list of acceptable items. Then price the suite based on what we need for our companies, not what they assume we need. For example, I use Product Design Suite, which comes with a ton of stuff I've never even opened... but does not include P&ID which I need. I know... P&ID is in Plan Design Suite... but Electrical is not. I need both. I'd gladly trade some stuff for P&ID to make the perfect customized suite for my small company.

Preach it, brother!
I had to opine on this for my niche because the suite I'm being stuck with isn't what I'd hand-pick for myself

That actually might not be possible from a licensing standpoint. Consider, how does a suite license know which products it will work with? If they come from different development silos there may be logistical barriers to getting that suite license to recognize all the projects you are picking (some products may not be suite-licenseable). Can't list them separately either - the suite licenses are not a 1+1 scheme.
Wouldn't that be the same as buying each software independently? Or is this more of a "I want a price break if I buy more than one" type of argument? You can only buy what you need, always have, still can. price hike or not.
Oh, no argument there, Dean. 😉 I am free to buy Revit MEP and AutoCAD MEP by themselves, rather than taking being shifted into the Design Suite Premium.
Of course, as long as I'm no longer being offered the package I had (MEP Suite), I'd rather pout about the new package not adding as much to MY tasks as they would to someone in a different branch of our industry. I'll make use of, to a small extent, the products that came with it, but, they're not as useful as some of what I'd request in a bundle.
I think it's a price break sort of thing. It's the same as with the cable companies. They have access to the satellites with all of the stations, but they bundle them as they see fit. We have to choose a bundle and get whatever channels they say. I like the idea of Suites from a pricing standpoint. The individual packages would be MUCH more expensve as standalones.
But, yes, I agree. It's a choice and always has been. But a little more flexibilty wouldn't hurt my feelings. That's all I'm saying.

If you can't see the value in the suites, then you have a chance to opt out. Contact your reseller if you haven't received the email about that. I believe it is only possible through February 22nd.
If there is truly an opt out option, take it: bundles are terrible, whether from Autodesk or other sources. They just set you up to pay more later (the stick that is behind the carrot you bit into).
I sure hope Mudbox is like totally free in this Autodesk PDS package. 1/2 🙂
I'm quite glad i didn't go down the suite road when my reseller offered it at their 'introductory' price. I just hope that Autodesk don't decide to start culling products that aren't sold as suites..

I resisted the offer last year to upgrade to a Civil 3D suite as the annual subscription is more and I don't really need all the bundled suite software. As long as Civil 3D can continue to be purchased "standalone" that's fine for me
