Ask Autodesk

We're getting ready to launch a new Ask Autodesk Google+ Hangout series, showcasing Autodesk subject matter experts answering your questions, and want your input!

Is this something that you would be interested in viewing and or possibly participating in?

What would you want to see? What would you not want to see?

If you had the opportunity to sit down and question anyone, or number of individuals at Autodesk, who would they be and what would you ask them? General positions / questions will work.

First 5 responders win a high five!

That could be fun, I like google hangouts.

I'd say someone from Usability would be great.

I got married in San Raf, and while I was there, Elena gave me a tour of the usability labs and talked about how they conduct their testing. It was supremely interesting.

A senior revit develloper would be nice.

or someone who is about interaction of different adsk software programs.

maybe some one from the airmax program?

Good idea to organise these hangouts

we need to get the Inventor and Vault teams talking together with customers more. Not independantly.

definitely some of the UX people along with product managers, there are some relatively simple UI stuff that needs to happen across autodesk products which seems to keep falling by the wayside.

I think the number of people involved in the hangout should be limited, some smaller groups more of the time to ensure equality of feedback. Maybe 10-12 max so its still enough to get a good dialogue/debate going.

I'd love to participate in this sort of thing, unfortunately our IT policy is right out of the dark ages and anything considered social networking is evil and forbidden - google+ is blocked -in fact I'm suprised they've not blocked this forum yet 🙂

Personally I'd be asking a lot of questions about Autodesk's plans for online collaboration & document management that works (or playing nicely with a system that's proven), markups and review and the growth of sites such as 4projects & BIW.

I really like this idea, but I wonder if it will be confusing if there are several different people asking different industry questions at the same time. I might get bored if someone was talking about dealing with construction and remodeling in Revit when I really want to know more about GIS and Map 3D.

Will there be scheduled times for different products? Having never been on the hangouts function of google+, i am not sure how it works....

Hi Jessica,

There will definitely be a schedule put in place and we'll notify you all of the agenda for each particular hangout, so you'll know what products and product teams (or other topics and groups) will be featured beforehand. We don't want you spending time watching something that isn't of value to you!

Ask Autodesk....OK,...can I get a job?

I'll gladly be a demo jock, travelling wherever. I'm single, kids are grown....Inventor and/or Vault Workgroups.....oh, sorry. That's not what this is all about now is it?  😞

Oh well, feel free to pass along the info though.

Tell me about it, I'm finding that to be the case out in the non-AutoDesk world as well.

It's like no one will touch me due to my vast years of experience and knowledge being too costly for them.

But then again, how much is it costing them to NOT employ me or those of us out here with the experience?

Truth.

We had the hardest time finding an experienced Mechanical Engineer for our office. Maybe some people would think my boss crazy for hiring someone who is so close to retirement age, but, we need his brains for as long as we can have them.

The existing ME (been here for nearly 20 years) is going to be retiring not too long after the new guy, and  I know my boss already dreads trying to fill their experienced shoes.

😉 Luckily they had no luck with keeping experienced people in my positition, so they finally got desperate enough to hire a noob into it.

Of course, that was 13 years ago this month, so I guess I'm not a noob anymore. Just a friggin saint. Smiley Tongue

I see that attitude in a lot of our Civil consultants. They've dumped most of the experienced Engineers and CAD Techs. They rely on a bunch of younger designers who technically know the work. They know how to follow the rules. But experience is what tells you when to violate the rules or when the rules aren't enough.

We had one job where (among many other things) the consultant designer put a pair of catch basins at the point of curvature of the curbs that would be coming out of a side street on to the main street we are rebuilding. That's what is supposed to be done. However, in this case, that was also the high point of the road profile. So all those catch basins would be catching is raindrops and there would be a puddle formed on the side street.

You can teach a chimp to drive a car and stop at red lights and go at green. But you can't teach him not to go on green if someone is standing in the middle of the intersection. Because green always means go. I'm not trying to compare anyone to a chimp. But this is a good parable to demonstrate the difference between being able to follow the rules and being able to use experience to make decisions.

I now this thread has been a little sidetracked by this. But it's the Break Room so I don't feel too bad about it.
