I presume that this is all being planned out in CAD first. Smiley Wink

I haven't done anything with modeling in years. But we have assembled a set of RR Valuation maps for Rockland County. I can tell you how to calculate the CL of the Erie from existing tracks and I can go on ad nauseam about the standard RR Gauge.

I've contemplated doing that (and started with an HO specific cad app), but I have found component design a little more fullfilling. In as much as it easier to move stuff around until you like what you have. I will adhere to 4% max on my grade changes.

When I graduate from the 4x8 and decide to spend the family fortune on toy trains throughout the entire house I probably will scale up and model in c3d Smiley Very Happy

When who was to become a good friend of mine's family built a house up the street some years ago it was a 28' deep by 60+ feet long ranch.

The front half of the basement (13' x 60') was dedicated to the his father's train and model shop.

Don't know if he ever finished and I don't think finishing was the end all be all...

It will grow

I know what you mean.

I watched this guy do a video blog on youtube, its like 75 installments and the guy is in this zen like state while he guild this river and other objects. As I watched a few I came to realize running trains is the last thing on his mind, and his layout goes on an on and on, like there is no intention of ending it.

Thank you

Started with a 4x8 HO scale layout as a youngster, seeing how fast i could get'em going.  had a cool switching system hooked up, multiple levels.  never got into actually doing landscapes.  Thinking bout doing a shelf ring around my living room, maybe a spur into the kitchen.  load up a sandwich or something and haul it to the couch.

Not exactly model rail roading but I do do miniature wargaming.  I build scenery for that and a lot of the techniques and things you use in model railroads applies there too.  We had an "Artist Showcase" at the office last week and I brought in some miniatures.

The hills in the image are made from 1.5 pink insulation board to give you a sense of scale.  The "electrical transfer station" in the foreground on the right is made up of a couple of standard spark plugs to give a bit more scale as well.

That sounds great!

I have my 4x8 bench work alost finished ( I'm really slow when it comes to hammers, nails and screws Smiley Very Happy) So then I'll start laying track. I want to do lots of landscaping with my daughter, but woory about not loving the layout. Just like an engineer : I have to cost benifit everything.

Thats beautiful Jeff. I'll be chopping up some insulation board soon for my mountains. I'll be sure to post the progress

The figures are multi part plastic models. I "pose" them and do a little customization, but I don't cast or sculpt them myself. I will post up some more close up pics of the miniatures and terrain later. That is just the picture I had on hand from th "artists showcase" last week.

Nice.  Warhammer, is it?  I'm a BattleTech'er myself.  Don't have much time to play these days, but I've got a small mountain of mini's to assemble and paint.

Yeah those are Warhammer 40k guys.  I used to play Battletech a long time ago but always used the paper/cardboard cutouts that came in the box.  Never used models.

Here are a couple of images of the minis up close.  Each model takes me about 6 hours to assemble and paint.

Have to give the nod to mother nature on that job.  Smiley Wink  That is my backyard.  I do live in New Hampshire, and we are the "Granite State" after all!

Nice - even a dreadnought! Is that ary particular chapter? I don't play, myself, but one of my friends loves his Tyranids.

And my apologies to the OP for the continued derailment of the original topic...

Not a particular chapter.  I just painted them green because my son likes green.  I was the one who originally took this thread off the rails.  Smiley Happy

Looks like you guys could use a 3D printer!  Or would that take the fun out of it?

hey joe,

keep this in mind, always leave an area to expand the track from.  i started with 4X8 then progressed to another 4X8 to create an 'L' shape.  i built my scenery around the exterior of the layout except one side where the controler is.  now i have boxed myself in.  i will have to remove mountains or something else to be able to expand.  i didnt think i would ever have the room to expand, but my wife got rid of her corner and now i have the opportunity.

after working all day on the computer, going home and working on the layout is really a great stress reliever.

goood luck.
