3-axis measuring tool

Hi,

I was unsure where to post this, hope this is an acceptable place.

Have a weldment assembly, ca. 2 x 1 x 1 meters in size. Manufacturing is struggling to do an accurate control measurement of placement of arms. Does anyone know of a good tool for this? We have an infinty scan/plot device, but this is to expensive to use in that environment by unfamiliar(sometimes) people.

Something mechanical that can be used to make +/- 1mm measurements in 3 axis would be great.

I am picturing a slide ruler with an "elevator or something of that sort.

Any tips?

First thought would be lasergrammetry.  Second thought would be a total station.  Those are the only tools I'm aware of that can provide the accuracy you are looking for, reconciled across multiple dimensions.
