How to take a screen capture and upload it

Problem:  Some of you may have a question about a drawing or may have an installation or licensing error pop up on your screen.  In many instances it is easier to share the screen image than try to explain the issue or type out the error code.  Many of you already know how to do this.  But there are a few that do not, or they are not doing it effectively - because they attach the image in a Word doc or a PDF.  This is not preferred.

Solution:  Using simple shortcut keys and included default programs, you can quickly and easily capture just the portion of the screen that you want to share and insert the image directly into your message.  To do so, please follow these steps:

Step 1:  To capture the entire screen, simply press the Print Screen (abbr. Prt Scn) button typically located at the top right side of the keyboard.  To capture only the active window (preferred) then you need to press the shortcut combination of Alt + Print Screen

This will put a copy of your active window onto the Windows clipboard.  You can then use this to paste the image into any number of accepting applications.  Note:  This is where many people will unfortunately use Word or some other document creator instead of saving the image natively for upload.

Step 2:  Paste the image into an image editor.  You can use the free Microsoft Paint program with Windows to do this easily.  But you can also use other programs like Adobe Photoshop, among others.  Use a image editor that allows you to save as a JPEG, GIF, or PNG so that you can easily upload your image to the web-based support forums.  Do not use an application that creates a document like .DOC or .PDF.

A) Launch Microsoft Paint from the Start menu or by Start > Run > mspaint

B)  Within Microsoft Paint, you can paste your clipboard image using Paste from the menu or by using CTRL+V.

C)  Save the image as a JPG, GIF, or PNG.

Step 3:  Open the Autodesk Discussion Forums and start your new post.  To insert your image, click the Insert/Edit Image button on the toolbar.  Use the Browse button to locate the image you saves and then click the Insert Image button to place the image into your post.

Once complete, your message will look similar to this one, with images included in the body of the text.  There is no reason to add image attachments, documents, or PDFs of the error when you can provide a screen shot of your problem.  Attachments can be left for log files and other necessities.

You can also use this method to paste screen captures directly into many different applications, such as your email, PowerPoint, and other business applications.

To do this with a MAC, please see the following link:
