Equivalents

In digging thru maya, i find it useful to think of some things in terms of Softimage.....it might be helpful to fling them in here as you get them....sort of a shortcut to maya using softimage language. these wont be complete equivalents, but i find that if i make myself a list, it at least points me in the right direction.

to start:

maya/softimage

sets/groups
ramp shader/incidence, gradient, toon
shader map/constant
ipr/render region (i told you some of these were a stretch)


anyone? thoughts?

Someone has developed something similar to the Softimage draw render region, I would expect Maya will adopt it. In the meantime, I have a marking menu to drag left in a perspective - which loads ipr render view in the panel ready to draw the ipr. Then marking menu to pop back to the previous view. As good as it gets for now.

Kudos, a lot of the "equivalents" that i'm writing, as i said, are only my impressions....very few are exactly interchangeable, but i think, "sets" seem to be the closest thing to "groups"

a bunch more as i go thru:

Maya Quick Keys

F focus on object
Alt lft mouse tumble view
Alt mid mouse track view
Alt rt mouse zoom/dolly
Space bar switch from 1 to 4 views
Click n drag create shape
1,2,3 subdivision (apparent) not real
Rt mouse (over obj) pop up menu (marking menu)
Shift add to selection
Ctrl remove from selection
Space Bar hot box
S set a key frame
q select
w move
r scale
t show manipulators
y last tool used
Ctrl shift when in pull down menu, will put item on shelf

Hypershade:

- Ramp shader can be used as “incidence”, “toon”, or “gradient
- Shading map is basically a “constant” shader
- Placement node “place2dtexture” is an “image” node in Softimage
- Ctrl/click in numerical box is “middle click”
- Middle/click and drag connects nodes
- The texture attached to the “place2dtexture” hollow arrow bottom right can function as a sort of “picker” node
- “Graph Editor” is essentially the “Animation Editor”
- The “Layered Shader” behaves like a “mix node” in the render tree
- “Convert to file texture” behaves like “stamp” in that it gives an unfolded uv layout of a texture
- “UV Texture Editor” is like the “Texture Editor”
- “Connection Editor” can be used like complex “wiring” in the “Render Tree”….you can “drive” attributes with other attributes. i.e. “incidence” node driving “transparency”.
- “Attribute Spreadsheet” behaves almost like “multi-selecting” in soft, but on steroids. You can adjust all the attributes of an asset, independent of the others while seeing the others
