Sketches

I really have a problem with sketches. I'm using fusion 360 on a mac.

My design is finished it's not really compicated, it's a box with some holes ready to be cut on a laser cutter.

I take all the faces one by one and right click "create" a sketch, 50% of the time it doesn't work. I can't click on any part of the design, have to click on "create" or anything else to unblock the situation. Then i save, i close fusion 360 and reopen it and usually it works. Hopefull a box as only 6 faces 😄

If you want my file to test in can upload it.

When creating a sketch, the process is reversible, you can either:

1. Select Model > Sketch > Create Sketch (or select it from the right click menu)

2. Select a planar face or work plane (Note: the face must be completely flat)

3. You should now be in an active sketch.

Or.

1. Select a planar face or work plane (Still has to be completely flat)

2. Select Model > Sketch > Create Sketch  (or select it from the right click menu)

3. You should now be in an active sketch.

When you enter the sketch mode, you should note:

  • Edges of any face that you are sketching are automatically projected into the sketch (magenta sketch figures)
  • The sketch grid may appear on the face or work plane to help indicate which suface you are sketching on
  • The Stop Sketch icon will appear at the end of the Ribbon

1. Does Fusion 360 appear to be hanging before entering sketch mode or after entering sketch mode? Do you see the Stop Sketch icon appear? Next time the issue occurs, could you try stopping the sketch and then re-creating the sketch using one of the above procedures?

2. If you disable the Layout Grid, does this have any impact on this issue?

3. Is it possible you are unknowingly selecting a different plane when activating the create sketch command? Now the planar face that you are sketching on is turned perfectly 90 degrees to the screen so that you cannot see the face you are sketching on....

4. Could you elaborate on what you mean when you say, "I can't click on any part of the design?" Does this mean that you cannot select anything or that you are unable to sketch?

5.  If you think this is a design specific issue, could you upload the archive file to the thread? I will be happy to take a look at it. Creating a screencast recording may also be useful to help troubleshoot this issue.

I hope this helps. Please keep us posted on your progress.

Look here I've clicked the surface i wanted to "create" a sketch (right click and "create sketch") on a "blue" selected component.

I enter in the "sketch" mode but it doesn't "draw" the sketch.

It's totally random.

You are right i clicked stop sketch

Did the same exact process and now it worked...

How can you screencast ?

Ok i found here you have an example : https://screencast.autodesk.com/main/details/5c9e370b-6eb5-4e63-bcd6-19b80060f36a

First i click the "green" component, i right click and "create sketch" and it works ( i must admit i was a bit pissed it worked first time when i screencasted :D). But, then i click a component on the right do the same process and this time it doesn't work. You can see me moving the mouse in all direction, trying to click everywhere without any effect until i click "stop sketching" then redo the exact same process and this time it works right.

It looks really random. Know that i've seen i can click "end sketch" and redo it, it's not a problem anymore, before i used to quit fusion 360 and relaunch...

EDIT:

Ok i just understood, between each "create sketche" you have to click "stop sketching" and then the problem nevers occurs.

Thank you for the ScreenCast , it was very helpful! I wanted to note that there is a small red circle on the top right of the frame for Fusion 360. This is an icon for the ScreenCast tool, embedded in Fusion 360. This should make recording screencast in Fusion 360 easy. You can learn more about ScreenCast in the below blog post.

I saw the edit to your last post, but I went ahead and recorded a quick video on sketching about how to edit and create new sketches in Fusion 360. It shows the perils of entering and exiting the sketch mode and what to look for. See the below link for a video.

Creating and Editing Sketches in Fusion 360

From your video, I noticed that the Create Sketch command shows on your right click menu in the video once you have selected a planar face (or a work plane). I have submitted a feature enhancement request in the IdeaStation on behalf of this thread. I think this may be helpful to other users in the future.

Thanks for posting this! Please let me know if you have any other questions regarding sketching.
