Issue Importing prt files into Fusion 360

Hello Everyone,

I am very happy with Fusion 360's ability to import prt files.

However, I did notice that when I import some files it says that the import succeeded, but when I look at the PDF it says that there have been errors and I cannot open the design.

When I look at the error message in the PDF it tells me that "The file being opened does not exist" and underneath that it tells me that I have a missing reference to another file.

Am I doing something wrong or in the wrong order?

I attempted to bring the file that was being referenced in first and the same error still occurred.

Any help or suggestions would be awesome. Thank you all.

Hi Jordan!

Welcome to the Fusion 360 community and thank you for the positive feedback! I'm sorry you're having difficulty with the PRT file. I don't think that you're missing any options or settings. I know that assembly file formats like CATParts or IAM's (inventor assemblies) need to have all the referenced files in the same directory as the top-level assembly files. However, since PRT is a part format for Creo, I'm not sure how this rule would apply. Perhaps this PRT is referencing another PRT file that is in another location?

Could you clarify what reference is missing with a screenshot of the PDF?

One solution may be to use another neutral format such as STEP to import the file. This should insure that all references are zipped up in a single file.

If at all possible, could I obtain a copy of the PRT file that you're importing? I'd like to investigate this issue on my end. If it's an appropriate size, feel free to e-mail to nathan (DOT) chandler (AT) Autodesk (DOT) com.

I hope this helps!

Thanks,

Hello,

Thank you for your reply.

The reference that is missing is a PRT file that is from the same folder as the one that errors. I have them both stored in the same location, but they are not in the same file.

Converting them into a STEP might be the answer, but I do not have the original assembly file so I am kinda out of luck there. Haha.

Thank you for your help anyways. I was just testing some stuff out so It's no huge deal. All I needed to know was that it was not some setting I am missing.

Thanks and have a great day

Hi Jordon,

This might be a problem that we should investigate.  If possible, can you send us the bad part files?  If needed we can set up an online meeting and go through the steps with you.

It is important to make sure we are not letting something slip by.  Any help you give is appreciated.

Email me at andrew.sears@autodesk.com and include Nathan Chandler and we will send you some Goto Meeting details.

Thanks,

Andy

Jordon,

Thanks for meeting with us this morning.  From what we can tell the translator handling .prt files does not look for references to other files unless you select the "Import an assembly" check box during importing.  This is not the same behavior with derived Inventor part files.  The Inventor data worked fine without the referenced file AND without checking the "Import an assembly" box.

This will apply to everyone else importing files into Fusion.

   - If a PART file from other CAD software fails to import, review the PDF translation report.  If you see an error in the translation report that states "file could not be found, etc." review the report and it should tell you what file it could not find.  After you verify the missing file exists and is in the same folder try importing the part file as an assembly.

We need to review this issue more.  If anyone finds other file formats that behave this way please let us know.  If you can share data that behaves this way it would be very helpful.

Thanks for letting us know about this,

Andy
