I just built this part in Fusion 360, but now I'm having trouble exporting to STL. I was able to export from the dashboard, but I would like the fine tuned control that the export feature within Fusion 360 CAD portion has.
Here is a screenshot of the error and part I am working on.
I have played with the options but am still having no luck.
Thanks for your help.

You also have the option to select either a component or body to convert to STL for printing. First select the body or component and then use the right mouse button to expose the context menu where you will find the Save As STL option. This will launch the Save As STL command dialog where you will have options for setting the number of facets. This video was created for the next release of Fusion (today) but I think you will find it informative for the workflow in general.
Let us know if this works for you.
Thanks
I recieved that error message after I tried to export. I used the exact same procedure to export as you show, is there an incorrect way that would give me that error?
I apologize for the troubles. I'm not familiar with this error message. Can you confirm that you have tried multiple formats and refinement option settings?
Also, are you saving to the local computer's hard drive or a network location? Do you have full read/write privileges to the save directory?
The issue may be file specific, could you upload an F3D file to this forum posting? You can use the export archive command from the main menu to save an F3D file to your desktop from within an open work space. You may also e-mail the file to nathan (DOT) chandler (AT) autodesk (DOT) com.
Thanks,
Yes, I have tried multiple settings with no luck.
The file is here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ib4032lc3ppnrqh/light%20clamp.f3d
Can you ask tech support what would cause this error message?
Thank you.
I was able to save your file to STL. Are you providing a location where you don't have write permission? Can you try browsing to that location from your Finder and create a new file to see if it lets you write? You will see this error when you don't have write permission.
best regards,
Sanjay Jayabal.
Yes, and I have tried multiple locations, all on my personal computer.
Since you said that you are not familiar with this error, will you please find out what causes that error message? I don't think it looks like a permissions issue.
I updated to the newest version and am still unable to save to STL from a body or componenet in fusion 360.
I just tried again, and it's working. I didn't do anything different. I have no idea what happened.
Thanks for your help.
I am running into the same issue with the latest version of the software. Just drew a simple box, selected it, right-clicked and tried to export to STL. I get the following errors:
Error: Autodesk Translation Services failed to translate the current document to stl file!
Error: STL Translator failed to export data
Any ideas what could be wrong? I am on OS X 10.10.5 Yosemite and I am using Fusion 360 v 2.0.1876
Welcome to the Fusion 360 community and thanks for the question!
When you say, right click on it, do you mean a body or component in the browser, the design in the data panel, or something else?
I just tried a simple cube and it seems to work. I hope that helps.
Thanks,
Exporting to STL by right-clicking the body in the browser just like in your screenshot fails for me. Any idea how I should troubleshoot this? This is the first thing I attempted to do after downloading Fusion 360. I tried restarting the software and my laptop, removing and reinstalling the software, but always get the same result. Here's a screenshot of what I see:
After selecting Save As STL, in the Save STL dialog, what do you have select for the Where field?
I note I can reproduce the error if I have Macintosh HD selected.
It could be related to a permissions issue regarding the directory you would like to save the STL file to.
I hope that helps.
Thanks,
I had the same issue, I though it had chosen the Macintosh HD drive, but Desktop under that again, turns out that Fusion tried to install directly to root - which isn't allowed of course.
Problem solved by choosing correct folder.
Mac OSX is basically a Unix operating system (Microkernel BSD Unix).
Normal users on Unix systems are only allowed to save data into their own user directory. The documents folder shown in @innovatenate's screnshot is one of the folders in the user's home directory.
The Macintosh HD is not 😉
I had this same exact issue with a part of mine that I had just drawn up. The issue for me was that I was working in offline mode. Just switched to working online again and it fixed the issue for me. I guess the export utility is server based.
I had the same error.
I was using a forward slash (/) in the file name and Fusion didn't like that.
Erased the slash and the file could be saved as STL
I am having this problem too. VERY frustrating, especially considering the part is so complex it took me all of 5 minutes to build.
And no, this has nothing to do with permissions, it is my computer and I have saved files to the same location without issue. In fact this is the first time I have had this issue.
I tried restarting Autodesk Fusion, did not work.
Edit - I tried saving a file as STL on a previous file that happens to be a component, worked fine.
EDIT - I SAVED THE PART AS A COMPONENT AT FUSION HAS NO PROBLEM SAVING AS .STL?????
