Decal Positioning Over Cutout

I am attempting to place a decal image on a single face.  However, that face has a cutout right where I need to place the origin of the decal and it will not let me place the origin where the face does not exist.  Is there some way of getting around this?  I can't find any way of reorienting the decal origin.

What I did for this problem was create a sketch on the face where the hole exists, and then in the center of the hole (where I wanted my decal positioned) I added a sketch point.  When I then went to apply the decal, I was able to select the point that I created and had the image nicely centered.  If you don't want it exactly on that surface, you could always create the sketch somewhere else, say, on a new plane that you have offset from the original surface.  Below is a shot of the sketch created with a center point, and then the centered image.  Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for the response.  I created a sketch on the face and put a sketch point in the middle, but when I place the decal on the face, I cannot select the sketch point.  I even tried placing a construction point on top of the sketch point and I still can't select it.  I'm assuming I would click on the origin point of the manipulator when editing the decal then click on the point I want it to align to.  When I try that, the points are not selectable.  I also tried clicking on the plane icon of the decal manipulator with the same result.  The points are not selectable when initially placing the decal either.

Perhaps you could just findy the X, Y location of that center point by using a sketch or the measure tool. Then when placing the decal, you could manually enter X,Y coordinates for an offset distance? Or perhaps you could use the Split Face command to create geometry that would "center" the decal?

If possible could you upload an archive file (*.F3D) to this forum thread or post some screenshots?

When I manually enter offset values that would position the origin of the decal within the open area, it will not update the position.

I've attached the model in question. (it won't let me attach the F3D file for some reason.  Says the contents of the file don't match the file type)

It is still unclear to me what the issue is from the images.  If you'd like, feel free to send the f3d file to me at james.herzing@autodesk.com and I will see if I am running into the same problems!

Hey Peter,

Check out the screencast of how I got an image centered on your part. Let me know if you need more help with this, hopefully it is what you're looking for.  Hopefully the screencast works, I'm still working on using it effectively!

The screencast worked great. I am using a decal instead of a canvas so that I can show what it would look like with printing on the case. Therefore, I need to center the decal on the face, but want the image showing only on the face and not over the cutout. If there is a good way of placing the canvas and then blocking out the part the lies over the cutout, that would work.

I have also tried rolling back to before I created the extrusion for the cutout.  I place the decal in the center, but when I roll it through creating the cutout, the decal is immediately shifted so that the origin does not reside over the cutout.  I tried converting the decal to a DM feature, but it just disappears.

I did a little more digging and found that the work arounds are unfortunately the best we have to offer as a solution to this problem right now.  We have it logged as an issue that needs fixed in an upcoming release, but currently can't be done easily.  Sorry about the inconvenience!

I think I solved the problem this way (rendered satisfactorily to me):

1. Create a patch of the area and form that will enclose the future decal.

2. Lift the patch an arbitrary 0.001mm above the surface of the part

3. Set the "appearance" of the patch equal to glass

4. Edit the glass appearance to have refractive index of air, and the color as white, leave absorption at 100mm and roughness at 0.

5. Set the decal on the patch. Voila!

Almost 2019, and this issue still persists... Real cool.

2022 and this issue still persists very frustrating.
