Can't constrain sketch to Planes?

I'm drawing a sketch on a flat model face that I know is perpendicular to the YZ plane, but I can't get a construction line to be collinear to this plane? How do I do this?

If you start the sketch on the face, the lines will all be on that plane- unless by some chance you have 3D sketching turned on in Preferences. Or maybe I’m not understanding what you mean by construction line- do you mean a sketch line, or a line created through the construction menu?

I mean I can't constrain the sketch to one of the default datum planes, in
this case the YZ plane (which the face i'm sketching on is perpendicular
to). I can't dimension to to it, nor can I constrain one of the sketch
lines (which I converted to a construction line) to be collinear with it.
The intention is to have the sketch constrained to the origin of the part.
I'm used to parametric design where good model practice is to constrain to
things that are stable, like datum planes and other sketches in the model,
rather than to model edges or vertexes which may not survive a model
modification.

OK, I understand. This seemed odd to me as well. The Fusion environment is very free form, and the default origin is just an orienting reference unless you specifically choose to use it.

If you want your design referenced to a specific origin (Fusion files may contain lots of origins) what Fusion seems to want you to do is to create a construction plane on that origin- the Y-Z plane in your case. Construction- Offset plane- select a zero offset. That will allow you to place sketches, reference dimensions, and so forth relative to that plane. I find I do this whenever I want to set up a way to build a drawing, or a part of a drawing, relative to a particular origin or feature.

Hi Mark,

If you are trying to constrain sketch entities to the origin planes, from the Sketch menu, Project the orthogonal plane(s) to your sketch first.  You can constrain or dimension to this projected entity.

The origin planes are not allowed as choices to project onto the sketch plane. I can constrain to the origin, though this is not ideal. I'm not sure why constraining sketches to perpendicular planes is not allowed. Seems like a very basic function.

I'm not sure why you are not able to select the default constructions planes to project into an active sketch. Take a look at the video below. I demonstrate how to do this and provide one more suggestion that you may find helpful.

Let me know if this helps or if you have further questions or concerns.

Thanks for the video. I went back to the sketch I was having trouble with and noticed a short line that must have been produced by that projection earlier. It's was not up where I was sketching so I never saw it.

IMHO I think we need to be able to constrain and demension to the default planes and axis. Having to project entities into the sketch of planes and edges is just more work than neccessary. I had the same problem trying to place holes; couldn't reference the default planes for dimensioning. The
