Flow difference in Beam element fan gate & 3d element fan gate

Hi All,

i have tried with beam element and 3d element fan gating system.

Please refer the attached image.

1. Only flow from the centre of the gate is observed in beam element fan gating system. based on the nodal connectivity the material is flowing.

2. In 3d element flowing is as like as a actual system.

i expect some more clarification on this.

Hello Inba,

Got your concern,

If you are performing a analysis with the 3D elements always use 3D runner & gating systems to get a better flow & other internal results compare to Beam elements.

but the same problem will occur with Midplane mesh also, where u cannot use 3D feed system, In that case u have to use connectors to solve this issue & u can achieve desired results. Please refer below image FYR

Hope u got an idea about the flow difference even with the beam elements, Connector option is not available for 3D analysis. So always model your feed system & mesh the same & assign property as a 3D cold runner before launching analysis.

You will always get a desired results in Moldflow if you are reducing the assumptions.

Imba / Sabari,

Moldflow Recommendation for Fan gate modeling are

For a Dual Domain or 3D model:

1. It is strongly recommended that you model the gate directly onto the part in the CAD application and import both the part and the gate as one entity into Autodesk Moldflow Insight.

2. If you already have a Dual Domain mesh, you can model the fan gate by itself in the CAD application & and add it to your existing part.

3. If not model midplane gate as below, which can be used for both DD mesh and also for Midplane mesh,

Note :  you will not be able to run Cool or Warp analyses with the Dual Domain analysis because mixed mesh types are not supported on these solvers.

If you have to run these analyses, please use the CAD program to model a Dual Domain fan gate.

Regarding connectors

1. A connector is a two-node linear element that is sometimes used when modeling runner systems, to connect a runner system to the part, when the two do not align exactly.

2. Connectors have zero flow or heat resistance and are simply used to complete the modeling processes and allow the simulation to proceed.

For example, when modeling a thin Midplane part, if the diameter of the runner exceeds the thickness of the part, a connector can be used to connect the two and allow the simulation to proceed.

3. Not recommended for Fan Gate.
