Birefringence / Polarization study

Hi Guys,

 

I am a newbie here. I don't see any optical properties in the material library.

 

Does that mean I cannot do a birefringence effect study?

Not many materials have optical in the standard database have material properties. You can find them all by searching database for materials with the stress-optic coefficient between -1000 and +1000 Brewsters (means that SOC is in the database). Im my version of ASMI the search returned 10 materials

 

Your result should be similar. For qualitative analysis it may be OK to use a material with optic data similar to the real one. If you want to do simulation for commercial purpose I would strongly recommend to arrange with Autodesk Moldflow Lab to have your material tested.

Thank you for your reply. I have some more questions and hope you can advise me.

 

1)How did you do the detail search for material with optical properties?

 

2)Any advise for the minimum aspect ratio and match percentage needed in order to get a more accurate result?

1) Searching for optical materials

 

On the top menu select Tools

Than Search (the leftmost icon on the ribbon).

 

On the pop-up window Select "Thermoplastic materials" and press OK

 

Press "Search" button (second right button in the top row in the bottom of the pop-up window)

Press "Add" button to add SOC:

Press Add

 

Specify Minimums and Maximums to be very wide:

Press Search button and enjoy the result

Regarding the mesh reuirements for this is my experience:

 

  • The optical analysis is only available for 3D so the matching ratios for the surface mesh are irrelevant
  • The number of elements across the thickness is often significant. Standard ASMI 6 is usually too small, better use 10..12
  • I have not seen a strong aspect ratio dependance, so standard Autodesk Moldflow recommendations of Maximal AR below 50 and average AR below 15 are probably stay.
