Importing part model with sprue/runner/gate attached

After designing an injection mold, we extract a model of the part with an integral sprue/runner/gate.  If we import that model into Moldflow and place the injection point at the top of sprue, will we get an accurate analysis?  Importing the sprue/runner/gate attached to the molded part is much faster than building the feed system in Moldflow, but I want to be sure the results are reliable.

Hi,

No one will assure you of 100% accurate results.

Yes what you are doing is correct. I suppose to get accurate results one need to input actual machine parameters in a 3D analysis with more than 6 elements in thickness band.

Greg,

In Advisers this could be OK if you have chosen to run a 3D analysis and the parts are not complex. If you are have choosen Dual-Domain then NO it will lead to problems or possible inaccuracies.

Dual Domain does not handle circular sprues and runners well.

Even if using 3D depending on the complexity of the parts there may not be enough detail in the runners to give an accurate enough result.

So best method to improve on accuracy is to manually add runners, gates and sprue to the model. This will ensure that analysis has the best base data to give a good result.

Quentin
