Hello,
Can anyone help me with symmetry planes please?
I have a very simple model, and have modelled half of it. I want to set a plane as symmetry, but cannot see any controls to do this. Tutorials etc I have read suggest I should be able to right click in the working area in FEA Editor, click "Add" then symmetry plane, but I do not see this option.
Can anyone help me please, before I go mad?!
Thanks,
Stuart

Hi Stuart,
I've moved this topic since I guess it belong to the "Simulation" (former Algor Simulation) software.
The workflow is not to chose a symmetry plane but instead select the faces that result from the symmetry cut and apply a boundary condition there. There are predefined buttons for the symmetry related to the main directions.
I hope this helps
Thanks Marco. Apologies for posting it in the wrong place.
Ok, so I understand that I don't specify a surface as a symmetry plane.
When you say "select the faces that result from the symmetry cut", do you mean all the faces I want to reflect?
And when you say "apply a boundary condition there. There are predefined buttons for the symmetry related to the main directions." - can you tell me specifically where to look for these please?
I have attached a screenshot of my model with the symmetry plane highlighted.
Thanks for your help,
Stuart
Hi Stuart,
>Highlight the Face> RMC > Select "Apply Boundary Condition" > Select Y-Symetrie
I hope that I described it close enough how to do it, unfortunately I dont have access to the program right now, so please excuse if the steps might be described incomplete.
cheers
Matthias
Thanks Matthias. Unfortuately when I RMC on the Surface I don't get an "Apply Boundary Conditions" (or similar)... I get:
Inquire

- Turbulence
- Fan Surface
- Inlet/Outlet
- Velocity
- Pressure/Traction
- Wall Roughness
Coordinate Systems
Rotating Frames of ref
CAD Mesh Options
Seem to be missing something! Can anyone else using Simulation Multiphysics 2012 confirm that they have the same menus when R clicking on a surface?
Thanks,
Stu
Hi Stu,
I assume that the menu on the RMC is changing with the environment that you are in, please check what happens if you are going to the "Setup" menu in the main toolbar before selecting the surface > RMC ........
cheers
Matthias
Thanks again Matthias, but no, it doesn't make any difference what environment I am in... (Screenshot attached)
Cheers,
Stu
For those of you who did not see Stu's image, he is performing a STEADY FLUID FLOW analysis.
Symmetry in a fluid analysis means that the fluid cannot pass through the face, but it is free to move along the face (no friction). So you should apply a prescribed velocity to the face, activate (check) the X velocity direction (since X is perpendicular to the face), and specify the X velocity as 0. Leave Y and Z unactivated (not checked) so that the fluid has no restrictions in that direction on that face.
