Sandwich without repeating laminate on core

Hi,

Is there an option Autodesk Simulation Composite Design 2014 to build a sandwich but without repeating the laminate on both sides of the core?

I have an existing symmetric laminate, and want to make the middle ply a core. However, it seems that I can only repeat the whole laminate on both sides of the core face.

I was thinking of making a lamina that represents a core and just inserting it at the halfway point, but I'm not sure if the failure analysis algorithms are any different for analyzing a cored vs un-cored composite.

Best,

Dave

Hi Dave,

Unfortunately there is not any functionality to create a sandwich with a laminate on just one side.  In fact, the laminates on either side of the core must be the same for use with the Simulation Composite Design Sandwich Analysis feature.

The Sandwich Analysis feature uses Classical Laminate Theory for its calculations.

You could potentially create a new lamina, with core material properties, then create a new laminate and add the 'core lamina' to it.  Then you would use the Plate Analysis feature to analyze your modified sandwich laminate.  However, determining all of the required properties to create a new lamina may be challenging.  If you are only concerned with calculation of deflections and moments, this maybe an effective solution for you.  I would be hesitant about using this alternative for failure analysis tools.

Thanks

ML
