Bulk planar volumetric flow rate

Could someone explain to me what the planar volumetric flow rate is based on?

I'd assumed that it was the total flow passing through a region of a plane, but it appears that may not be the case.

From what I understand, it is bulk (mass weighted) average.

More formally, it is area averaged.png

where phi is the parameter (flow, velocity, pressure etc) and rho, v, dA being local density, velocity vector and area vector of the local element. The integration done over the plane through which flow is happening.

So depending on the mesh distribution the results may be different. Hence you would want mesh sensitivity analysis be done.

Cheers for the reply. That explains why it is that the flow through a collection of coarsley meshed nozzles does not equal the total flow into the system.
