Maya 2011 Software Render: trying to make invisible plane catch shadows

As the subject line says, I'm trying to set up a plane so that it doesn't show up in renders, but the shadows that fall on it do.

I tried making the plane and then assigning the "use background" shader to it, but all that does is make it show up as black in the renders. I've changed several parameters and none of them seem to change that. Could some kind soul offer insight as how to set this up properly?

Many thanks in advance!

Okay, if I create a new scene with just a sphere and a plane to catch the shadow, it works. The problem seems to be something in the scene I got from my instructor, because I go through the same steps there and I get the black plane.

Weird.

Time to go ask him WTF.

Thanks anyway!
