Time History + Non-Linear hinges

Hi,

Can I use Non-Linear Hinges in Time History Analysis (design for blast)? In the help it is written "This option is used for defining and assigning non-linear hinges to structure bars. These hinges are used in Pushover analysis for selected structure types in Robot".

Regards,

Yes, it is possible to use non-linear hinges also in static analysis or in time history analysis.

Of course the existence of such hinges in the model results in the automatic change to non-linear static analysis or to non-linear time history analysis respectively.

thanks for the reply but in addition, please can I mix non-linear hinges with elasto-plastic properties of the sections? I mean, software does something but I am not sure if the results are reliable.

Mixing non-linear hinges with elasto-plastic properties of the sections in the same model but in different bars is OK.

MIxing them in the same bars is not recommended because it corresponds to modeling the same effects (plastification or non-linear material) in 2 completely different ways:

  1. in case of non-linear hinges the non-linear behavior is "concentrated" in user-defined place on the bar - outside of the hinge the material is linear
  2. in case of elasto-plastic properties of the sections the bar is discretized both in section and along its length as the series of connected cubicoids. In each of these cubicoids the elasto-plastic strain-stress relation is checked (attention: it is averaged inside each cubicoid). Thus in this case the plastification can be "distributed" both along the section and along the length of the bar.
