Defining bar elements by Nodes

Hi,

Wonder if anyone can help. 

When defining a bar, I sometimes given an option to do it by "Bar Points" but sometimes only by "Node Coordinates". Is there a way to choose how the bars are to be defined? The "Node Coordinates" option is always given when I open a New Window.
