Cable Thermal Load

I want to determine the effects of an increase/decrease in temperature on a simple cable. For example, an overall 90 degree Fahrenheit change in temperature along a 100 foot 8mm cable.

 

I've setup the temperature Load Type and Nature and applied the +/- 90deg thermal load using that type. When I calculate, I do not see any change to reaction and the deflections say "NA".

 

What am I doing wrong?

This has not resolved my question. I have setup the cable and thermal as you have shown however there remains no force due to the thermal load input.

 

Please reference attached model.

Almost like but: smileyhappy:

 

1. I think that the assembly load case (the first defined) should include self weight

2. You requested the force in cable to be 0 for the assembly load case which is impossible if any load is defined

3. The TY temperature load would cause bending rather than axial force. You should use TX instead.

I am analyzing this as a "cable" however this is actually a group of thin rods therefore there will be no pretension. Initial force in the group of rods is basically zero.

 

Applying the thermal load as TX has solved my issue.
