ARSA not accurately snapping to nodes

Hi,

New to the software and wanted to try some basic stuff just for practice.

Was doing a 2D Portal Frame using an Imported DXF background of a Frame I had been working on in AutoCAD.

When trying to add the beams and columns using the DXF Background as a guide, I was pleasantly surprised when ARSA snapped onto the nodes for the frame in the background quite readily. But I was even more surprised when I built up the entire frame and when I zoomed in on different nodes of the drawing I found that the nodes of the frame and the background were misaligned. Trying to redraw the elements of the frame that were inaccurate was impossible and I would just end up with the exact same result.

If you look in the photo below you'll see a column on the left (in red) and yellow cross hairs with a snap box on the right. If i click while the cross hairs show im snapped, it doesnt take the snapped point as the beginning of the column but instead takes a point 2mm to the left as the beginning of the column even though I was nowhere near that point and there are no objects to snap on in that area.

Its become really frustrating and impossible to work with. but I'm sure I've got to be doing something wrong.

Ideas? Help?

Thanks in advance

It's probably snapping to a grid in the background.

Try this.

Hi and thanks for the reply tony.ridley.

I already had Grid Snapping off so that wasnt the problem.

I have found a work around though. Placing nodes seems to stick and do the trick, then I snap into the nodes when constructing the beam.

Also realized that if i place the background on different planes (i.e XZ, XY, ZY) it the issue I have varies slightly.

Int the XY; it has the issues defined in the first post. Innacuracy of anywhere from 2 to 50mm even when cross hairs are showing it has snapped on an intersection or end-point. It does however get the X Coordinate right, its the Y coordinate it messes up and doesnt snap properly to.

In the XZ Axis: it snaps to the correct X Coordinate (532) but sticks to the 0.00 on the Z, this happens for any point when trying to construct a beam. It gets the correct X but alway sticks to 0.00 on the Z.

In the YZ; honestly havent tried this, since I found creating nodes first then snapping to them when constructing beams works in the XZ plane.

Have tried entering the Coordinates manually but nothing worked except creating nodes to snap to first.

Any more ideas as to what could be the problem?

Thanks again for your suggestion, though I had already tried it.

P.s.

I should actually have titled this topic as :ARSA not accurately snapping to background intersections and points

Since when I placed nodes over the background DXF image it actually worked.

Perhaps you set your display for fixed plane e.g for Y=5m as on the attached picture. To change this press on the coordinate system 'box' and then press 3D in the displayed View dialog.

Commenting the statement of ChubbChubb: "ARSA not accurately snapping to background intersections and points"

In case of DWG or DXG backgrounds ARSA is not snapping to intersections of background lines. It is snapping only to ends and centers of lines.

The improvement request to enable snapping to intersections of background lines registered to be implemented in future versions:smileysad:

Thanks Artur.Kosakowski,

That seemed to have worked :smileyhappy:

I'm not sure how or why fixing the plane would have caused such issues but just glad it worked. The frustration is over (for now).

Thanks again, really appreciate the solution.

Yeah, Dunno why I said intersections. Meant just end point and mids. Sorry for the confusion.
