Multi-part WF Column Management

We have a number of multi-story buildings with multi-part WF columns. For example, a seven story structure with a column that graduates from a W14x109 to W14x90 to W14x61.

I would like to have this work as a single member when moved, copied or rotated. I would like an instance parameter that copies with the column so that every one of it is noted and tagged "C1"

If I "group" the column parts together it detaches from the grids with the flag "A structural element will be detached from grid(s) due to inconsistent group membership." If I copy the group, the mark number goes blank on the new column.

Is there a method for a multi-part column that has a tag that copies with it, and stays attached to the grid system?

You should be able to do this with assemblies: (in 2012 and 2013)

Select the columns you'd like to move/act together and make them an assembly.

Make the category "column"

Create an assembly tag that meets your needs, and tag the assembly instead of the column.
