A standard detail view is like a plan view, it has a Cut plane and a View Depth.

Go into the view properties and change these to have the same value. I believe this will give you what you are looking for.

You can also make a detail view that behaves like a section, by using the section tool. Make sure you choose the correct type in the type selector when you create the section.

Oh- I think get it now.

Do this:
Open the column family in the family editor.
Go the family parameters dialog.
Uncheck the box for "show column pre-cut in plan"
Reload the family into the project.

Columns should now show correctly.

Be aware that this may negatively impact performance.
