Shared Parameter Files

What is the best practice for managing shared parameters in a project? Through using the tutorials and just messing around in Revit, the mechanical designer and myself have amassed many shared parameters located in several different shared parameter files. Besides the fact that each of us is using a different file for our parameters is not very streamlined, will it have any effect on the performance of the program. Is it required that both of us use the same file? What types of problems will we face if we continue like this? Should we create an all inclusive shared parameter file and import from this file into job specific files? Any comments would be appreciated.

Typically, you would want to use one shared parameter file for a "firm", or at least for a single location/office. The best way is to create the shared parameters, get them into your template, and then each project started after that will have those parameters available. At least the the Architectural side shared parameters are required if the parameter is to appear in a tag, or the parameter has to be applied to more than one catagory of object, or to make them editable in a title block. This is NOT a rule, but an observation. Typically, the Architect will have to send their Shared parameters file along with the Architect's Title block, to enable a consultant to utilize the architect's titleblock correctly.

We use one file for all disciplines. This ensures that all shared parameters
are unique. If they are not unique it can create problems.
