Serious synchronization problem

Dear all,
I am suffering a serious problem with my HVAC model.
I am working on a Basement + Ground + 1st + 2nd floors model, 6000 sq.m each. Whenever one of my team synchronizes his local file with the central file, some air terminals are disconnected from the duct (Randomly). These makes huge problem if I change the duct design and need to resize the ducts using Revit.
Kindly deal with this post as an urgent problem and your soonest reply is highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your valuable cooperation.

You can try to split elements if different worksets and every person to use different workset to edit model.

There are so many issues when Syncing to central when multiple users touch elements that are connected.

Here is an example we tested:

I modeled a z pattern of pipes in section

The lower pipe was at a 6' offset than rose up to 10'.

I had a user move the bottom pipe to 8' and moved the top section to 7'.

This changes the vertical element length, however this piece does not change after sync.

After we synced the results were a broken system, but we didn't receive a warning.

I than had my coworker move his pipe back and in doing so it moved my piece back.

I have done test with coworkers and the results are bad.

Sorry, but there is nothing you can do other than work in the file all alone 😞

Hello,
When more than 1 person try to edit one system have a problem with central model. The solution is simple - spit systems in different worksets and every person have to work on different system in different workset. Etc. When I make water supply system on building (cold, hot, return water), I use workset - water supply. In this time another user can use without problem workset sewerage and make sewage system on building. At same time 3rd user can make water treatment systems. When more than 1 users try to modify elements in same workset they must move different elements. In every case working of multy useras on same workset and same group of elements is complicate and have a big chance to issues in central model.

Hi all,
Thanks for your valuable attention.
As a matter of fact, each one of my team is working on a different workset and different system. For example, one is working on smoke/ventilation system, one is working on hvac ducts and one is working on hvac pipes.
For this building I already stopped working on a central file and assigned one person to reconnect all disconnected elements and recheck all systems and flow rates hoping that we could finish on time, which is tonight 😞 .
I am concerned about a further problem.
I will start working on two more buildings. One is 6 times that building and the other is 12 times. Is this problem still exists, that would be a nightmare and no one will accept the task of reconnecting thousands of elements.
If anyone has further ideas, please feel free to share.
Thanks again for your highly appreciated attention.

Hi Powerian,

I haven't heard of air terminals disconnecting when syncing.  Would you mind sending me a copy of your project so I could try to reproduce your issue?  Please send me an email (eric.grey@autodesk.com) and we can decide on a way to send it.

Thanks,

Hey Eric

I think this is the issue. Imagine a section view where I have an air terminal at 8'. From the terminal duct rises up to 10' than runs parallel with the ceiling.

User 1 raises the terminal to 9'. The vertical piece of duct changes in length, but no user owns that element.

User 2 lowers the 10' duct to 9' which changes the vertical element yet again.

There will be no warnings or alerts as users do this.

Until a user modifies those series of elements, than there is a warning.

I could not get the warning to appear on sync, only if a 3rd attempt to modify the element was done.

I did not test closing the file and re-opening.

Thanks for posting that workflow Jeremiah.  I could reproduce the issue using the 2015 release.  We currently do not check out elements that were not directly modified by a user.  You can see this clearly by using the worksharing display feature.  This feature shows who has ownership of which elements.

We have made a change to the worksharing behavior for MEP elements in the 2016 release.  Now the elements that are indirectly modified are also checked out.  I tested this workflow in 2016 and ran into the "Can't edit the element..." error when User 2 lowers the duct.

Of course I can't guarantee that this will be the behavior until 2016 is released.  Please try it when you have a copy or now if you are on the Beta.  Hopefully this new behavior will clear up these synchronization problems.

Regards,

Eric
