I have Revit MEP 2012 (the latest student version available) and I'm trying to learn from the infiniteskillz tutorials. The problem is that I can't open the work files because they are made in MEP 2013. Is there a way around this?

No, there is absolutely no way around this. All Revit Projects and Families can only be opened in the version year they were created in. If they are opened in a newer version, the files are "Upgraded." There is no "Downgrade" option available.
You can download later versions of student software for Revit: http://www.autodesk.com/education/free-software/revit-mep.
Alternatively, there is always the latest: http://www.autodesk.com/products/revit-family/free-trial This downloads the 2015 version of the software as a full version which you can use for 30days.
After that time, you can still use Revit but you will not be able to print or save.
Hope this helps
