please HELP??

I am currently trying to upgrade my software, and I want to do more 3-D objects. I work on all MEP drawings i am currently looking at purchasing Autodesk AutoCAD Revit Series- systems plus. what i want to know is that is this the best product out right now, to create a 3-D model of my MEP dwgs. is their a big learning curve coming from autocad to revit or would i be able to pick up fast? Also do I really need revit or will the ABS do just as much with out the Revit to create quick 3-D models? I need to upgrade soon, and a speedy response would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Though I can't say enough good things about Revit Building, everything I've
heard (second hand knowledge) is that Revit Systems simply "isn't there
yet." Basically it is the least developed of Building, Structure and MEP.

Scroll down to pkirill's posting of "Enough with MEP as Red-headed
Stepchild...." He's a first hand user and lists his beefs with the software.

Good luck

although it isn't there yet in general the revit learnign curve seems to go one of two ways.

one-you get it. you walk through the tutorials, and are an average user pretty easily w/o many issues with minimal instruction.

two-you don't understand parametric modeling or how sheets/views work and bungle through not understanding why certain changes affect other things.

I agree with metis, it's not that difficult of a program to learn. And given
how much Building and Structure have advanced in just the last few releases,
I can't imagine Systems is going behind too much longer. Get Revit, start
learning it - it may meet all your needs at the moment. If not, perhaps
within the year it will be, and by then you'll have largely mastered it.
ACAD and Revit work great together - import/export between the two.

The future is definitely Revit. Integrated Building/Structure/Systems models
will be without equal.

Do you know of any training books that may be good to pick up to get a good handle on Revit. If possible do you know one to pick up for Autodesk Building Systems as well. Any help would be great thanks again.

personally, i haven't found any books that didn't rehash what i already knew or could tell me anything useful that wasn't in tutorials or the help file for revit building.

the BIG thing to understand is parametric modeling is NOT drafting. it's creating a model of something instead of drawing a picture (even a 3d picture) of something. as such it is FAR more powerful, despite autodesk's ongoing efforts to shift interaction back towards drafting due to too many user side interface operability comprehension issues and limiting the accessibel power of the software. (read: dumb down towards astutely banal levels)

personally i can't wait for the next full release of the MEP package to test out and see if it will actually have useful lighting bits, or if that side of the EE business is still being neglected.
